Georgia RB Ealey says Spikes shouldn't be suspended

ATHENS, Ga. -- A most unlikely person came to the defense of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was suspended for half a game for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey

Ealey said Tuesday he doesn't believe Spikes should have been suspended.

Half a game? Wow. What would have happened if Brandon Spikes had succeeded in removing Washaun Ealey's eyeball from its socket? Read more

In fact, Ealey seemed surprised the play from Saturday's game drew so much attention.

Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week's game against Vanderbilt after the defensive captain stuck his hand in Ealey's helmet and appeared to try to stick his fingers in Ealey's eyes.

Ealey says he doesn't agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough.

"That really didn't matter to me," Ealey said of the suspension. "That's their decision. He shouldn't, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football."

Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn't hurt.

"He really didn't gouge my eyes," Ealey said. "He really didn't get a chance to get close to my eyes."

The freshman said he believes similar incidents happen all the time.

"I'm pretty sure it goes on back and forth," he said. "We probably do it and other teams do too. It's all football. We're just out there trying to have fun."

Top-ranked Florida beat Georgia 41-17. The Bulldogs play Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

On Monday, Spikes issued an apology.

"I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions," Spikes said. "I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions."

The Southeastern Conference issued a statement on Monday saying it reviewed and accepted the discipline handed down by Florida.

Meyer said he believed Spikes retaliated after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Spikes' "helmet went flying off ... and there was one time he got hit with his helmet off."

"It was totally unintentional," Richt said. "They were totally just playing ball. That might have got him bent out of shape. I don't know about all of that."

Ealey carried 17 times for 70 yards against the Gators.

"It was just a lot of emotion in the game," he said. "We were out there fighting. It was a big rivalry game. Everybody was just out there talking trash back and forth. ... We were just out there playing football and having fun."

Notes

  • Richt said Caleb King will start over Ealey at tailback in Saturday's game against Tennessee Tech. Richt said King has the edge in pass-blocking but said Ealey "will continue to play." Ealey has started the last two games.
  • Richt said he hopes top receiver A.J. Green, who will miss this week's game with a pulmonary contusion, can return to play against Auburn on Nov. 14.

Can all of you whining people out there get off your high horses????  This eye gouging is not the end of the world, it does not make Spikes a "Thug" and it is not rare....  I played LB at a Div 1 program and things like this go on everyday.... The only difference is that this was caught on video....  All of you people out there that are so appalled by this either have neve ...(more)

My admiration to Ealey for stepping up to support Spikes.  Football is a tough sport, played by tough guys with skill and emotion.  You must know that a lot of dirty stuff thats happens at every level.  This is not a news story.  Anyone expecting players to think sportmanship first should turn the TV off and go out for a long walk where they can listen to the birds an ...(more)

Then I guess Spikes was in the right afterall and isn't the scumbucket that most would associate with someone who purposefully tries to dig into other player's eyeballs.

Hopefully, with Ealey's opinion, the NCAA will now make it officially legal to allow player's to maim one another after a play is over.

Don't worry Ealey, its not all about you

Just like the spouse that will not press charges against her abusive husband.

Since 1990 the Bulldogs have only defeated the Gators 3 times.  I guess it's in their head now.

Everyone knows Georgia is one of the dirtiest teams in the land. What Ealey really means is , "Spikes shouldn't be suspended. I mean, we do it all the time and we shouldn't be suspended for it either." Just because you do it doesn't make it ok, genius. Ealey's probably the one who gouged Spikes in the first place. Of course he's going to say Spikes shouldn't be suspende ...(more)

Saints have actually played good team, are undefeated, and somehow number 2 behind a team that has played only ONE team with a winning record the Arizona Cardinals.  The Colts are nothing more then beneficiaries of a cake schedule and will be exposed when they play a decent team.  I just dont know how a team who has beaten absolutely no one is ranked higher than a team that has play ...(more)

who jump to stick their opinion in before they know facts. I read so many idiot columns from writers who wanted a longer suspension. Journalism has become such a piece of @#$% industry. Writers have now become nothing but space fillers. MORONS, INC- that's what most of these websites and newspapers have become-anything to sell a banner or a print ad.  The world has become such a #@$hole ...(more)

Evidently he is...Good Lord...I guess he didn't "see" anything happen with Spikes. What a twit...I say both teams get together and have a free-for-all to see who comes up with the most eyeballs...

Last year Spikes practically raped Noshow Moreno. This year he manhandled Ealey and that promising QB of their Logan Gray(0-3 1 Int). Before any forgets lets not forget how AJ Green got jacked up and had to leave the game. Yes it is sad folks UGA was expected to be down this year, but not this bad. Nobody would have thought they would lose to UT and get throttled by UF in what was supposed to be a ...(more)

I know he would never read this, but this kid really resembles all that is right with football. He sure is a tough kid. Too often nowadays, the media takes a story and forces it down your proverbial throat. There is way too much scrutiny on athletes that play with such high emotions. We the fans put those pressures on them. Im not making excuses for them, and yes, eye gouging is wrong, b ...(more)

As a sports fan I give kudos to Washaun Ealey for trying to diffuse a situation that the media is bound and determined to blow up.  The SEC has intense rivalries, but despite this, I find Georgia and Tennessee fans and players to have a high degree of class (Lane Kiffin excluded), and Washaun Ealey just confirms this impression.  Well done young man.

How can Florida play EIGHT conference games this year, and only have ONE of those games be agains't a ranked team????  You brush off Florida's joke of an out of conference schedule by saying they play in the best division, but the SEC only has three teams th ...(more)
