Florida coach sent video of Tebow hit to SEC

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer believes Southeastern Conference officials missed a late hit on quarterback Tim Tebow in Saturday's game against Georgia.

Meyer said Wednesday the crew calling the game should have flagged Bulldogs linebacker Nick Williams for knocking his quarterback to the ground well after he had gotten rid of the football.

Meyer sent video of the play to Rogers Redding, the league's coordinator of officials. Meyer declined to reveal what the SEC told him, saying he didn't "want to step out of line."

Last week the SEC changed its discipline policy about coaches publicly criticizing officials, making the punishment either a fine or a suspensions and doing away with the reprimands. It was unclear whether Meyer would be fined for commenting on officiating.

Meyer told reporters on the SEC conference call the play was directly in front of the referee and should have penalized. Tebow handed off to running back Jeff Demps, took a few steps to his right and wasn't looking when Williams came unblocked off the right edge and slammed into his chest.

"That should have been a penalty in my opinion," Meyer said. "Obviously, it should have been. You've got to protect quarterbacks. That's the whole purpose. It's right in front of the referee. I'm not sure how they're going to handle that, but ... that was one of the plays we did send in."

Meyer didn't mention the play until asked about it Wednesday, possibly trying to avoid drawing punishment from the league. He also prefaced his comments by saying he has "great respect" for SEC officials and the way the league handles complaints.

The SEC decided to stop handing down reprimands for ripping officials last month after three coaches in less than a week were reprimanded.

Commissioner Mike Slive was given full discretion by the league's athletic directors and presidents to hand out the punishment. He will determine the amount of fines and lengths of suspensions on a case-by-case basis.

The SEC's officiating -- and public complaints by Tennessee's Lane Kiffin, Mississippi State's Dan Mullen and Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino -- has drawn plenty of unwanted attention for the league.

An officiating crew was suspended after it called penalties the league said were not supported by video evidence in the LSU-Georgia game Oct. 3 and the Arkansas-Florida game Oct. 17. The SEC publicly announced the suspensions, an unprecedented move by the conference.

When told of Meyer's comments Wednesday, Kiffin wondered what would happen to his league counterpart.

"Urban Meyer? Criticized the officials?," Kiffin said. "That will be interesting. We'll see."

Have any one of you Florida haters actually read the article about this?  Meyer didn't arbitrarily throw this out there as an issue to take the heat off of the Spikes.  He was directly questioned about it by the media.  Was he not supposed to respond to the question?  He hadn't brought it up prior to that.  Since when does responding to a question make you a winer?  ...(more)

While I personally do not agree with the gag order the SEC has issued, I think Urban Meyer is way off base here.  There was a late hit, it happens all the time, move on.  I find it really humorous that his "appropriate" discipline for Spikes, worse (in my opinion), after-the-play eye gauging was initially a half game suspension.  That's basically saying I am willing to iss ...(more)

Heaven forbid a ref's call not go the way of Florida for once.  That Arkansas/Florida game was horrible.  Florida always gets the calls called in favor of them.  As long as youre wearing a Florida jersey you get the Tom Brady rule... even if you play defense.  SO big deal Florida didnt get a call for once.  About BLEEPING time.  In my book if Florida wins a National c ...(more)

According to Meyer, you let your players get away with whatever they want and make sure they face zero consequences for their actions.
When a question arises, just try to blame someone else or divert attention to a different play.

This strategy works best in a completly corrupt league where officials are free to determine the outcome of games and overall general sketchyness is the

For the past month, all we've been hearing is how the refs are on the take and intentionally making calls in Florida's favor.  Now Meyer shows one piece of evidence that shows refs make bad calls against the Gators as well and he's a whiner.  Man, if that's not the definition of hypocrisy, I don't know what is.  Personally, I'm not thrilled Meyer is doing this.  Complainin ...(more)

So Meyer is more concerned about a late hit on his QB that wasnt called than his on player trying to gouge anothers eye out? He wants the SEC to do something about it, kinda like he "did something" about Spikes? I just dont understand it. Its good that he went about it this way, instead of (and it pains me to say) the way Kiffin Mullen and Petrino handled it but it jus doesnt make any sense to me. ...(more)

When the eye gouge story first came out I brought up this late hit as well.  It's about time it came out into the light.  Everyone wants to jump on the Spikes issue and jump on Urban Meyer's suspension.  Okay all of you fine citizens looking out for a ball player, let's see your outcry for UGA to step up and do something for a very dirty play, every bit as dirty as Spikes in the end ...(more)

Don't worry everyone it turns out the corrupt SEC officials just got confused and helped the wrong team. You have to understand, the responsibility of determining the outcome of every major SEC game is alot to handle...they're bound to forget which side they're on every once in a while.

But all is well as Florida managed to hold on and pull out the win in spite of the momentary la

Anyone who sees that hit knows it was intentional and late and should have gotten a 15 yard penalty.   I think Richt would be sending the right messege if he suspended the guy for the 1st quarter of their next game.    That will show that this stuff won't be tolerated by him and has no place within Georgia football.

Had this been Mark Richt sending in a video of a penalty against a Florida player, everyone would be outraged. Saying that Florida is home to criminals. But, since it's the Gators, Urban is being a baby and should just deal with it.

Hilarious! So funny how jealous the majority of you are.

Anyone know what the official rule is for this?

I know if the quarterback has let go of the ball on a pass this would have been a blatent roughing the passer.  However, I know if you make a hit like that on a lineman because he's stopped and the whistle hasn't blown dead, it's not a penalty (hence coaches tell you to make sure you play TO the whistle and always keep your hea

Come on Tim. Keep your head on a swivel. Be an athlete. I'm kidding Gator fans take it easy. It was a dirty play, so let's be thankful that The Chosen One was not injured. Maybe it was a makeup no call from the Arkansas game.

I would suspend Nick Williams for half a game against TN Tech just so that justice is served.

Don't get me wrong, Meyer should be commended for bringing those miss calls to the front.  College football has to fix this mess, not just the SEC.  Give me the contract to these replay booths.  I can bring in half drunk casual fans that will do better than these bozos.  Y

Meyer is only trying to get the attention off his thug spikes for trying to put a players eyes out and his 30 minute sit down. Late hits happen in every game. But trying to gouge a players eyes out doesnt. It takes a low life POS to gouge at a players eyes and a bigg ...(more)
