Change of heart: Gators' Spikes to now serve full-game suspension

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With all the negative attention "weighing heavy on his heart," Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes asked to serve a full-game suspension for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of a Georgia running back.

Coach Urban Meyer obliged, saying Wednesday that it was in the top-ranked Gators' best interest that Spikes sit out Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.

"I really don't want to be a distraction to the team," Spikes said after practice. "I want the guys to prepare without any negative things going on, and I feel like if I would play, it would be a big thing going on. I'm just trying to stay out of the way and just motivate the guys."

Meyer had faced some criticism for only suspending his star defender for the first half of the Vandy game. The Southeastern Conference accepted the original punishment.

Spikes stuck his hand into the facemask of Georgia's Washaun Ealey during Florida 41-17 victory against the Bulldogs. There was no penalty called at the time, but after talk about the play spread, Meyer reviewed it and decided to punish Spikes.

Meyer, Spikes and defensive coordinator Charlie Strong agreed to increase the punishment.

"A lot of the negative things out there really weighing heavy on his heart right now and so we thought that, as a group, we decided the best interest just for the team to not play him Saturday," Meyer said. "It was a group decision and we're doing it out of respect to our team so we can focus on trying to win our ninth game.

"We think it's the right thing to do. We support Brandon fully and we look forward to get back and finish the season the right way."

Spikes is fourth on the team with 42 tackles and has three sacks.

He considered entering the NFL Draft in January, but decided to return for his senior season in hopes of helping Florida win a third national title in four years.

But he's battled injuries all season. He missed time early in the season because of an Achilles' tendon injury, and sat out most of two games because of a strained groin. He played only a series against Arkansas on Oct. 17 and sat out the entire game the following week.

He returned against Georgia and finished with a team-high 10 tackles. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

What he did to Ealey, though, overshadowed one of his best games of the season. Meyer said Spikes was retaliating for things that happened earlier in the game.

Ealey defended Spikes on Tuesday, saying he didn't believe he should have been suspended. Ealey also said he was surprised the play drew so much attention.

Fifth-year senior Ryan Stamper is expected to replace Spikes in the starting lineup.

"I'm pretty sure that Stamper got my back, and my teammates really support this decision" Spikes said.

When are we going to see Johnny Brantley? I think it is high time we see what he can do for an entire game. This next one against FIU would be a good test. I am not taking anything away from T T, but we need to see what we have for the future. Not being able to see much but mere mop up duty. I for one love what Tebow has done for the school, but this year he has regressed in my opinion. He alone i ...(more)

You are just like all the other jealous haters out there...can't beat 'em so join in the bashing of the Gators.

I understand why you and a lot of others hate on UF...we are highly ranked, been very successful, and have our QB in your face whenever you watch sports tv.  I get all that...but what you and others are saying on these boards is so childish.  So you really think Sp

Anybody remember that Ohio State linebacker that choked a Wisconsin QB while in a pile up like this one?  He was immediately suspended by Tressel for 1 game.  I remember that QB (i think it was Sorgi) couldn't even breath or communicate in the huddle and had to be replaced in the game. Spikes is now being suspended for 1 game for his eye gouging incident.  Seems like stand ...(more)

If this player had been at any lesser known college, there would be no suspension.  Why?  Because there would not have been a camera that had caught him.  This has been going on forever.  Doesn't make it right, but still this is another case of someone being over punished for something that they shouldn't even be punished for.  Even the player who had his eyes ALMOST gouge ...(more)

I'm not advocating dirty plays, nor am I Florida's appologist, but Spikes dispicable actions, and the motives of those actions, are much more understandable having seen the abuse he sustained from numerous Georgia players. It seems that Hamurabi's "an eye for an eye" seems fitting in this case. Spikes had his helmet torn off purposeley two times and was on the recieving end of numerous d ...(more)

Anyone who believes Brandon Spikes decided to sit out the second half is about as stupid as they think you are. Florida didn't think there would be this much backlash, so they are trying to put this story to rest. Im sure poor Brandon must be extremely distraught about how this media attention will effect his teams chances against mighty Vandy. B.S., SpinDoctoring at its worst and most obvious. ...(more)

Whether Spikes was in the right or not to do what he did, I think Urban Meyer's actions were even more hypocritical. He decides to suspend him for the 1st half? The less important half?

What kind of a lesson does that teach someone? It's like telling someone that they can't go out at 8 but they can go out at 11 instead so that you're only partially punishing them.

I thi

I see a lot of Florida fans defending Spikes on here, which is fine.  However, the excuse that "stuff like that happens in every pile-up", or "Spikes was getting beat up on during the first half" does not cut it.  Ever hear "two wrongs don't make a right"? Who cares what other teams do, or what happened to him during the first half!! Under no circumstances d ...(more)

So Urban Meyer did the commendable thing by suspending Spikes for a game, but lets be real about this.  It's Vanderbilt.  So essentially he's giving Spikes the day off against a far inferior team with a pretty tough South Carolina team coming up next week.  All I'm saying is lets not make too big of a deal about this...that's it and that's all.

Oh WOW Big Deal; they are playing Vandy for crying out loud.  Of course Myer does not have a problem agreeing to let him sit out the whole game, I bet if he were playing Alabama, LSU or any other ranked team or a team that was an actual threat to beat them I bet Spikes would not have suggested that it be increased to a whole game but even if he had I bet Myer would not have agreed to it.

Dude - your reporting sucks as usual. Truth of the matter is that Spikes has volunteered to sit out the entire game because he was upset with the criticism Meyer was receiving for being too lenient [despite the SEC approving of the 1/2 game suspension] and did not want to be a distraction to his coaches or his teammates. Meyer OK'd Spikes descision but it came from Spikes and the other players and ...(more)

Look guys, I don't deserve to be suspended. I thought about it really hard, and I knew exactly what I had to do.

I went and spent 5, or 20 minutes with Tim Tebow. I'm now a better person for it.

So I shouldn't have to miss playing against Vandy this weekend.

And leave Urban alone.

Yea the gators put their heads together and made the sit down a WHOLE game with a weak team for trying to BLIND a player. But the SEC and the NCAA proved their love for the gators for not stepping in and sitting him. Dez was set down for the rest of the year by the NCAA for telling a lie about dinner. ...(more)

OK, so all the people, including myself, who called the 1/2 game suspension a joke now got a full game suspension. I originally called for a two game suspension so he'd sweat during the more risky SC/UF game.

But, the 1/2 game suspension silliness is history and he's now serving a suspension for a full game.

Done. Over. Move on.

Let's all focus on UGA, now, and get
