WAC suspends replay official who failed to overturn call

DENVER -- The Western Athletic Conference has suspended a replay official for one game after he failed to overturn a call in a game last weekend between San Jose State and Boise State.

Official Michael Goshima's one-game suspension will go into effect this weekend.

The suspension -- the first of a WAC replay official since the NCAA implemented instant replay in 2006 -- was based on a play where a runner was ruled short of a first down and Goshima's review incorrectly upheld the ruling on the field.

The WAC said that upon further inspection, "the runner clearly made the first down and the call should have been reversed."

"The WAC expects the same type of performance from our instant replays officials as we do from the on field officials," Commissioner Karl Benson said in a statement. "And while errors are going to occur both on the field and in the replay booth when they do, there must be accountability.

"Instant replay is used to get it right on the field and in this case the official had a chance to reverse a call at a very critical time in the game and did not. Thus, he will be suspended for his next assignment."

In 2003, the WAC suspended an entire crew for a series of mistakes at the end of a game between San Jose State and Hawaii.

To this day, I can't figure out why the replay official from the Wisconsin-Fresno State game last year wasn't suspended?  For those that don't remember, let me refresh you.  A receiver for Fresno catches a pass, clearly secures it and takes 2 steps up field, and fumbles the ball.  Wisconsin recovers it I believe inside their 30 yard line and would have been in prime scoring range, r ...(more)

You really have to give props for a conference to acknowledge that they made the wrong call. I just don't know why its so hard for the big 10 to admit that there have been several mistakes made by there officials. I have seen to many obvious calls blown in big games, we have replay so we can get the call right. I guess it comes down to having a commissioner that isn't afraid to stir the pot, even ...(more)

How about taking the same initiative and suspending the officials who blew three obvious calls in the Indiana/Iowa game?  Not that I care about either team but that was injustice to college football.  Just my opinion.  Discuss.

First off, I am assuming it was a very blatent error in order for it to actually come to the point of discipline.   I didn't see the call nor the game so I am going on the assumption that those making this difficult decision have done so with great deliberation and accuracy due to how important it must be to take this kind of stand on it.
