SEC fines Meyer $30,000 for criticizing officials

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Urban Meyer of Florida became the first coach to be disciplined under the Southeastern Conference's new policy regarding criticizing officials.

The league fined Meyer $30,000 on Friday, two days after he said referees missed a late hit against quarterback Tim Tebow in No. 1 Florida's 41-17 win against Georgia. Meyer sent video of the play to the SEC office, but his mistake was telling reporters refs missed the call.

The SEC commissioner wasn't playing around when he fined Urban Meyer $30,000 for his mild rebuke. More

Last week, the SEC changed its policy about coaches publicly criticizing officials, making the punishment either a fine or a suspension and doing away with reprimands. The change came after Tennessee's Lane Kiffin, Mississippi State's Dan Mullen and Arkansas' Bobby Petrino were reprimanded after they publicly questioned officiating.

"Coach Meyer has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement. "SEC bylaw 10.5.4 clearly states that the coaches, players and support personnel shall refrain from public criticism of officials. The league's athletics directors and presidents and chancellors have made it clear that negative public comments on officiating are not acceptable."

Meyer apologized following the fine.

"As I stated last week, I have great respect for commissioner Mike Slive and the Southeastern Conference, and I respect this decision," Meyer said in a statement. "There was no intent to criticize an official after being asked about a situation that occurred last Saturday, and I apologize for my remarks."

Is there any doubt that this rule was created because of Kiffin's direct defiance of the SEC's written reprimands for criticizing officials? It's a shame that Meyer has been hit with such a steep fine for such a weak offense. In all reality, Meyer answered a question. He didn't go to the media to complain about the officiating like Kiffin (who was completely wrong in his accusations) or Mullen did ...(more)

30 grand for a negative comment? That should be illegal to fine someone that much to begin with over a little comment about a ref. I thought in America, the punishment had to fit the crime. Boy am I wrong I guess. This is nothing more than grand theft from the SEC Mob bosses. They are out of control and need to be taken out of their positions of power. They are criminals. This goes way beyond some ...(more)

Am I the only one watching this nonsense that wants the real issue addressed? Czar Slive wants to come across as the guy who is ' In Charge", yet cannot seem to win in the court of public opinion when it comes to these incompetent referees. The answer isn't in what Slive has done....1) Threaten coaches, or 2) Furlough Referees. Neither of these tactics will work in the long term. What needs to be ...(more)

It's about time they changed the rules. It was getting old reading how the coach's blamed the refs for losing.

Look, I understood Petrino arguing for what happened. It cost him the game. And I understood Kiffin, again, another game changing call (although I still believe the officials were right), but what is Urban complaining about? His team won. Why not complain that the officials mis ...(more)

I mean, "you cannot speak out against us in public".......who is running the SEC ....stalin??  If your refs continue to miss calls or make bad calls then maybe you need to reevaulate your own employees....Its been multiple multiple games that you refs have botched very important calls, even calls that gave the advanatage to UF....The fact is you are the ones screwing up and your way ...(more)

I'm by no means a Florida fan...or an Urban Meyer fan but it is getting to the point of ridiculousness when that media sets a guy up like that.

The coach just stepped off the field in the battle with a Conference opponent and they saw that you were upset about a no-call...it's still on your mind.

Then the reporter asks something like, "How did you feel about that cal

Why is it so bad for coaches to criticize officials after they blew a call that may have changed the outcome of the game.  In this instance, the game was not altered but there have been many situations where officials have made horrible calls that have cost teams their season.  Everyone makes mistakes and that is acceptable but if you do make a mistake you need to be strong enough to han ...(more)

Do you hate it when coaches and players respond to questions asked by the media with "no comment"? I know that I've heard media types get upset when that is the answer given. But now you know what that response is going to become more popular than ever from SEC coaches and players.

Q. Did you think the holding call that brought back the touchdown run that would have sent you

I find it comical that Urban Meyer got fined for criticizing the refs. If there is one coach that should leave the refs alone at this point in the season it's Meyer. How quickly he forgets that those same referees are the one's who padded 2 wins onto his record this year. I don't know how that one officiating crew isn't strung up in a barn in Arkansas somewhere after handing Florida that win a few ...(more)

This is absolutely ridiculous, Urban Meyer did not criticize the Officials, he says he believes they missed a call. How in the world is that criticism. Maybe you could consider it criticism if it was on a play that did not affect a players well being. However this late hit, was on Tim Tebow, who had a concussion just three weeks ago. Not only was it a late hit, it seemed like the Georgia team in g ...(more)

Did Urban get a discount b/c he was correct?  I guess the Ricky Bobby  "with all due respect" defense didn't work.  What was the commissioner's response to the missed call?  Total pull of steaming poo from Slive.  He is bowng to newest media frenzy that UF is somehow "protected" by the league.

I feel it is fairly obvious he was testing the new rules, especially to come out criticizing right after the new rule change. It really isn't too big of a deal, and the rule had to be enforced, so i have no problem with this. (though i don't entirely agree with the rule, but as long as it is in place then a fine should be given)

On another note, 30k is nothing to Meyer, quite the life

I said from the start that meyer did it to get the attention off of spikes. The school will pay the fine and the SEC will let him keep his gangster thug spikes for the big game in Atlanta Dec. 5. To show how stupid spikes suspension was. ...(more)

Good to see the SEC's "Quit'cha Bitchin Rule" is now in full swing. He was warned, but yet he still complained TO THE MEDIA....if he had kept his mouth shut and simply sent the tape to the SEC, he probably wouldn't have been fined. But, rules are rules for a reason. Florida is likely going to be playing Texas for a national title. It's time to focus on THAT, and not on some supposed late ...(more)

Good to see Urban at least trying to get those SEC officials back in line.  They got off track a little bit last Saturday, not throwing all the calls Urban's way, but this ought to get them back where they've been for the first half of the season, right in Urban's pocket.  Urban, note to self: If they give you all the calls, it looks a lot like there's a fix on to make sure your team doe ...(more)
