New Mexico changes policies in wake of Locksley incident

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico has changed its human resources policies in the wake of an altercation involving football coach Mike Locksley.

University president David Schmidly said on Friday that personnel issues previously handled by the athletic department now must go through the school's Division of Human Resources.

The move comes after school administrators acknowledged making procedural mistakes while investigating claims by assistant coach J.B. Gerald that he was punched and choked by Locksley on Sept. 20.

In other changes, athletic managers, coaches and support staff must receive additional training on existing personnel policies and procedures.

The university also plans to review practices for handling public records requests.
