TCU climbs to fourth in BCS standings; Gators still No. 1

NEW YORK -- All those blowouts have carried TCU to unprecedented heights in the BCS standings, giving the Horned Frogs hope -- however slim -- of becoming the first BCS buster to break into the national championship game.

TCU took over fourth place in the Bowl Championship Series standings Sunday behind Florida, Alabama and Texas. It's the highest BCS ranking for a team from a conference without an automatic bid to the big-money bowl games. No potential BCS buster had ever done better than sixth in the BCS standings.

Latest upsets have Horned Frogs knocking on door

Florida is first for the fourth consecutive week, and Alabama and Texas switched spots for the second week in a row.

The Gators and Crimson Tide have clinched their respective divisions in the Southeastern Conference and will meet Dec. 5 in the league championship game. One of them is all but guaranteed a spot in the BCS title game on Jan. 7 in Pasadena, Calif., if they can get through the next month without a loss.

The same goes for Texas, which has three regular-season games and possibly the Big 12 championship remaining.

The other undefeated teams -- TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State -- need the top three to stumble to have any shot of reaching the title game.

The Horned Frogs (.8620) moved up two spots and are just ahead of Cincinnati (.8579) and Boise State (.8125). Each is 9-0 with three games left.

TCU has been rising by racking up lopsided victories. The Horned Frogs have won their last four games by an average score of 44-8.

Meanwhile, Boise State has played close games against Tulsa and Louisiana Tech in the last month, two teams with losing records. Cincinnati struggled to put away Connecticut in a wild 47-45 victory on Saturday night.

TCU is ranked fourth in both the Harris and coaches polls, and in the compilation of six computer rankings used by the BCS. Cincinnati is fifth in the two polls and third in the computer ratings, while Boise State is sixth across the board.

BCS analyst Jerry Palm said TCU, even if the teams in front of it lose and the Frogs keep winning, still could have a hard time getting into the BCS title game.

Cincinnati from the Big East has a tougher schedule down the stretch and could pass the Horned Frogs. Plus, there's no guarantee that in the end a one-loss team would not get more support from poll voters than TCU.

"If they have to vote for No. 2 are they going to vote for a TCU team ahead of an 11-1 Georgia Tech or a 12-1 Alabama if their only loss is to Florida," Palm said.

The Horned Frogs and Broncos are also competing to earn the one automatic bid that non-automatic bid conferences can earn by finishing in the top 12 of the final standings.

TCU plays Mountain West Conference rival Utah on Saturday. A win there for the Horned Frogs could provide even more separation between them and Boise State, which does not have another ranked team on its schedule.

This is all this is, FALSE HOPE.  The coaches and fans pretty much know they have no chance at the Title Game.  The players though I think they get nothing but the false hope.  They will get a BCS Bowl Game and Whoop up on a good SEC, Big Ten (or whatever power house conference the team is from)  team then sit back and say "We deserved a shot.  Ahem, Utah for Example ...(more)

I believe a playoff is certainly needed, just because of the conference affiliations within the BCS and the fact the human polls are all biased to the big conferences.  How can you limit the BCS to 1 team from a non-BCS conference if the 2 best teams are from a non-BCS conference?

Anyway, I

Let me first state my affiliation  ( I am NOT a TCU Allum, I am a NT Grad )

I know the sytem in place is not perfect and a playoff would be nice but there still will be a number 13 who feels cheated byt the system.  And, if we had a playoff who would chose the top 12.  Is this the same System that has Temple ranked #25.  I like what temple has done and has been much

They are ranked 4th this week!    Number 1 and number look headed to play in the SEC championship.  I do not believe that they human voters will ever let TCU or any other non BCS conference play for the BCS championship!  It is sad but true that the built in bias will not let it happen.   Watch these rankings carefully in the next few weeks.   I th ...(more)

How did the Horned Frogs hop over the Bearcats? We should all remember what confrences these teams are in because the rankings are getting ridiculous. First, TCU is in the Mountain West. The confrence is only at best an average one and the teams in it are all at or below average. Next, the team that is one spot behind Cinci. Boise St who is in the WAC. 5 of the 9 teams in that confrence have below ...(more)

Before I even start, please realize that I know an undefeated Texas WILL make the BCS NCG. I don't oppose to it, but they're are reasons why it shouldn't happen. Since we have no playoff, it is open for discussion.

Let us assume the following:
Kansas State wins the Big 12 North
Either UF/Alabama remains unbeaten
TCU, Boise State, and Cincinnati also stay unbeaten.

This is what I would like to know.  Florida finishes the season undefeated.  Alabama finishes their season undefeated.  Florida is ranked number one.  Alabama is ranked number 2.  Florida and Alabama play each other in the SEC championship game.  Alabama wins the game by the narrowest of margins.  Who plays for the BCS Championship Game?  Is Texas good enoug ...(more)

I think my logo tells you where I stand. I am homer for my LONGHORNS, but I am not College Football Stupid like some of you guys who are posting. Do you really believe that a one lost SEC team will bump TEXAS out of the NC game? Even being a homer I give respect to Florida and Alabama and notice that they are good team and have beaten everybody on their schedule to this point. Like Rick Flair s ...(more)

Where is the consistency with the BCS?  Ok so LSU loses to two great teams, so you move them up..fine.     Lets rewind 3 or 4 years back when OSU was #1 in the country and Michigan was #2 in the country.  Or it could have been reversed..either way they were 1 and 2.   And they played each other in the final game that year...let me remind you there were NO ot ...(more)

Before any of us gets too indignant over why everyone other than Florida, Alabama and Texas has no shot at the title game, let's not forget the following.

In each of the following match-ups it is eminently possible that the currently 1-2-3 ranked teams walk away with a loss: Florida v South Carolina, Texas v Texas A&M, and Alabama v Auburn. To that last one, you might even add Alaba

how are the trojans ranked 10th?   The Ohio State win in Columbus was huge, but they don't have another big win (the ND victory is loosing its luster with every passing week) and they have two losses (one to snap UW's losing streak and the other a drubbing at the hands of Oregon).  This and they barely beat ASU this week and yet are 4 spots ahead of Oregon after a loss to Stanford?& ...(more)

16 team playoff system it would take 4 weeks.  If that is too much football for these kids, then how does the other levels of college football get by doing it?

Who's in?

11 conference champions with 5 at large births
You can still use the BCS rankings to find the top 5 at large teams.  I know that the number 6 team would still feel jaded, but win your conferenc

LSU loses and moves UP? I think this shows how fraud this system is. Also how is USC at #9 and Ohio State #11? Maybe I'm just pi$$ed that Pitt is stuck behind three two loss teams, two of them having off years.

Forget the pretenders such as TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise.  It makes good story but there are only 3 major teams this year though IMO none equal USC and UT in 2005.  Florida's only ranked win is against LSU and they haven't beaten a ranked team all year.  We all know Alabama has beaten an overrated Virginia Tech and LSU (see above).  Without the aid of questionable referee calls ...(more)

I cannot wait for Alabama - Florida .  How many guys in that game will play on Sundays?  My guess is about 20.  Both teams are loaded and to get to the League Title Game in the SEC undefeated is a major feat.  I think that Florida will be a 6.5 - 7 point favorite.  This game will be a classic!
