Memphis' West fired after 2-7 start to ninth season at school

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis fired coach Tommy West on Monday, saying the school wants to go in a different direction after the season.

Athletic Director R.C. Johnson said at a news conference that he had met with West earlier Monday morning and told the coach that the university "wanted our program to go in a different direction." He also asked West to stay through the end of the season.

When the coach had his turn at the microphon,e he said the university needs to put more money in the football program or shut it down. West didn't hesitate to share his feelings about the program's outdated facilities. He said there was only one answer if fans didn't demand improvements or for the university to make necessary changes.

West's Record at Memphis
Year Record Bowl
2001 5-6 No Bowl
2002 3-9 No Bowl
2003 9-4 Won New Orleans Bowl
2004 8-4 Lost GMAC Bowl
2005 7-5 Won Motor City Bowl
2006 2-10 No Bowl
2007 7-6 Won New Orleans Bowl
2008 6-7 Lost St. Pete Bowl
2009 2-7 No Bowl
Tot. 49-58 3-2 in Bowls

"I couldn't say [this] as a coach, but it's too painful," West said. "It's too painful for coaches, for players, for people, for fans. Put something in it or do away with it, one or the other."

West's firing comes after the Tigers started the season 2-7 and less than 48 hours after a 56-28 loss to in-state rival Tennessee.

West said taking the team in a different direction should include a commitment to improvements that bring the program up to the basic standards of other schools the Tigers compete against.

He is 49-58 in his ninth season as head coach, 84-93 overall with stints at Chattanooga and Clemson. He led Memphis to five bowl games in the past six years, and he was one of only four coaches in school history with four winning seasons while coaching at least five seasons with the Tigers.

"History will continue to repeat itself, folks, if they don't do something about it," West said, his voice getting louder in a fiery rant. "Whoever they hire, our fans need to demand one of two things. You have to demand you give him a equal stick to fight with within our conference. You've got to give him an equal playing field."

Johnson said the search will start immediately. He said while Division I experience was not mandatory, recruiting at that level will be an important factor in the new coach. The athletic director said he already has "been inundated with candidates."

"The goal is very simple, to get the best available coach as quickly as possible," Johnson said. "We have not hired a coach. I don't have somebody in my hip pocket that I'm going to bring in [Tuesday] and announce. But I will tell you that there are people we are ready to consider."

The Commercial Appeal first reported the firing.

West will finish his home tenure Saturday against UAB. The Tigers' final two games of the season are on the road at Houston and Tulsa.

The firing comes on the heels of Saturday's woeful showing against the Volunteers, assuring Memphis (2-7, 1-4 Conference USA) of its second successive losing season and third in the past four years.

Besides a 35-20 victory against UTEP on Oct. 10, the only other Memphis victory this season was 41-14 over Tennessee-Martin of the Football Championship Subdivision.

West was named the Tigers defensive coordinator in 2000, and a year later became head coach, replacing Rip Scherer. He led Memphis to three consecutive winning seasons from 2003-05 and his fifth bowl was last year's St. Petersburg Bowl.

But in recent years his teams struggled early in the season and rallied down the stretch to become bowl eligible. This year, they never recovered from a poor start and have lost three straight by wide margins.

The worst might have been a 38-19 loss to East Carolina on Oct. 27. Not only did the Tigers perform poorly on the field, but a rainy night resulted in only a couple of thousand people in the stands at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in a nationally televised game.

That, followed by Tennessee's thumping of the Tigers on Saturday, apparently proved too much.

This is yet another sad example of a school which has never had anything but poor to mediocre teams firing a coach for fielding their normal poor to mediocre team.

If this was a major program leaking recruits that might have come there, maybe you blame a coach. However, the school is encircled by Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio St., Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss, and yes ... even Arkansas and Vand

I have connections with the west Tennessee political seen, and it's been said for over a month now that this was going to occur, and that Fred Smith of FedEx and some other influential boosters have already put in a package into place for Tommy Tuberville to come on board next year as head coach of U of M.  It should become public knowledge by the end of the year.

But, even as a

Any reasonable Tiger fan knows that this needed to happen, and it finally has.  This team is abysmal, playing in an abysmal conference.  If you live locally, you hear about getting to bowl games.  What is not mentioned is the record is usually 6-6 and they play a equally lousy team and get blown out.  His defenses have had holes all throughout ever since he became head coach.&n ...(more)

Tommy West is 100% correct.  No, he's not the best coach in the world, but that school does not give a damn about football.  Only basketball which is a lot cheaper to support.  Seriously, that AD won't make a change to anything, and others will use Memphis as a stepping stone to a better job.

As a UGA fan, PLEASE hire Mike Bobo or Willie Martinez!  PLEASE!!!

Groucho Marx uttered a famous line... " I wouldn't want to belong to a club that would have me as a member ". With that said, the rumor mill is already ridiculous. What on earth would Tuberville, Fulmer, Bowden, or the other big-time names being thrown out gain by going to Memphis? The facilities there certainly aren't enough to attract 5-4 star players. They may keep a few local prospects at home ...(more)
