TCU vs. Boise State? Fiesta Bowl would be open to it

The Fiesta Bowl would be open to matching undefeated TCU and Boise State in its Jan. 4 game, CBSSports.com has learned.

While nothing is certain, Fiesta officials were favorably considering such a matchup this weekend based on attendance and television appeal. The Fiesta's interest in the game shot up recently when it realized the potential TV ratings appeal of such a game.

If it happens, it would mark the first time two non-BCS schools had met in a BCS bowl. While no one is talking for the record, Fiesta officials are intrigued about the idea of matching the two undefeated schools which, at this point, won't have a chance to play in the BCS title game.

The matchup might also enhance the chance of the winner gaining a share of the national championship in the Associated Press poll. No. 4 TCU is the highest-ranked non-BCS program. Boise State is No. 6.

TCU could rise as high as No. 3 after Saturday’s play. The matchup could be affected if the Horned Frogs or Cincinnati could play for the national championship. For that to happen, Nebraska has to upset Texas in the Big 12 title game. If that occurs, Boise State could fall out of the BCS all the way to a minor bowl such as the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl in Detroit or the GMAC Bowl.

The possibility of matching TCU and Boise in the Fiesta has lingered since it became evident that all five undefeated teams could play in BCS bowls. TCU, 12-0, has clinched a BCS bowl berth. Boise State, 11-0, is all but there with a game remaining Saturday against New Mexico State.

TCU's fan impact is a question mark. It hasn't played in a major bowl in 50 years, its living alumni number less than 100,000 and the school has trouble selling out home games. However, Boise State made itself attractive to the Fiesta after the number of tickets its fans bought to the 2007 game, the first bowl played in the new Glendale, Ariz. stadium. In that sense, the fallout from that overtime upset of Oklahoma is still being felt.

Even though BCS pick 'em day is a day away, the BCS bowl lineup is still in flux. If the favorites win, here is how it shakes out:

BCS title game: Florida/Alabama winner vs. Texas

Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon

Sugar Bowl: Florida/Alabama loser vs. Cincinnati/Pittsburgh winner

Fiesta Bowl: TCU vs. Boise State

Orange Bowl: Iowa vs. Georgia Tech/Clemson

And a nightmare for the rest of us who want a playoff.  This would be the perfect game for the head honchos at the BCS who want to keep proving that their system works.  TCU and Boise State both make a BCS bowl, proves that they are ready for the big time and we need a playoff, right?  Not if they play each other.  Sure, TCU won the Fiesta Bowl, but they beat another Mid Major ...(more)

The BCS Conferences are scared of TCU and BSU and do not want to play them.  Except for Oregon and Washington and VA Tech next year no one will schedule them Neutral Site of Home and Home.   They are trying hard not to have them in the BCS games because they are scared to lose to them and they are greedy and do not want to share the money!

If there are a few more games wh

If lazy ass Dennis Dodd would do his research he'd know that. Here he flips off a column about Boise trying to get to 12-0 against New Mexico State because they have one game left. If he'd take a second to look at the website he works for, he'd realize they are already 12-0. They play a 13th game this year due to playing a road game at Hawaii.
And does anybody really believe that enough AP wr

Nebraska to beat Texas.  Then honestly the picture will become clearer.  TCU would go to #2, Florida #3, and Texas #6.  Then itd be TCU and Alabama for the national title, and Boise State versus Nebraska for the Fiesta, and Florida versus Cincy for the Sugar Bowl.

Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. Cincinnati

Florida vs TCU

If the BCS officials want to postpone talk on a playoff system they should try their hardest for this matchup. Florida has by far and large the best chance at beating TCU (not including the Alabama and Texas who will be in the championship). Matching TCU and Boise St. would do nothing to help the BCS's case against a playoff system. It would only result in more controvers

Why would anyone want this game.  Dont get me wrong I think both teams should be in BCS games but not against each other.  I want to see what these teams can do against other BCS conference teams to see if they should be taken for real year in and year out.  I think they should be given more credit for what Utah and Boise have done but there are alot of people that dont, but if they ...(more)

I love to support the mid majors but NOT when they play each other! The point is to either prove that these guys belong and we can have even more controversy OR show that they're pretenders! Doing this is just protecting the big boys from possibly getting embarrassed!

A few years ago I was on the mid-major bandwagon.  I stuck up for the little guy (Boise State).  But after this year all I want is for TCU and Boise State to play in a BCS game against the likes of Texas, Alabama or Florida.  I WANT to see a 63-16 blowout.......so then we can be done with discussing if these schools deserve a shot at the National Championship.

The dream matchup which will never happen would be to see TCU play for the national championship against Alabama if "bama whips Florida and Texas falls to Nebraska.  The sad part of that unlikely scenario is that Boise State would not have the opportunity to prepare for and take on a major program in a BCS game.  Those in power know that it is very feasible that this year both TCU and Bo ...(more)

The BCS bowls besides the NC title game don't get the best ratings any way.

So a novelty would be to have the other two undefeated teams play.

I would rather watch this on tv than Nebraska versus a 2 loss Big Ten school like Iowa or Penn State. Would Nebraska or Iowa/Penn State fill the stadium easier? Yes. Would more people watch on tv? No. ...(more)

I don't want to see TCU-Boise St. there, not because it would be a a bad game it wouldn't but I really want to see both of them get a crack at major programs since the big boys don't want to schedule either of these teams with a 50-50 split for fear they could lose to them in a road game therefore jeopardizing their rating in the polls early in the season.Look what happened the last time Boise got ...(more)

I hope not.  Don't get me wrong.  I would love the matchup against TCU.  A rematch of last year's 1 point loss in the poinsettia bowl would be an amazing game.  However, I would much rather the opportunity to nail a team from the Big 10/SEC/ACC.  The players on both sides would get much more excited and into the game in that scenario.

Here is how the script will go if Texas loses, if they win then all if good with an SEC vs B12 BCS Championship game.

There will be a so called "bad call" or key injuiry that the talking heads will talk about all Sunday how the SEC Championship game was "tarnished" and a National Championship rematch of the SEC final should be valid.

Let both these teams go beat up on another major program in a BCS bowl ! But it would be funny to see those same major programs shut out from being in a BCS bowl game by teams they traditionally would have beaten, but are no longer capable ?
