New Burlsworth Trophy to honor top walk-ons

  •

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Former Arkansas offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth will be honored with a new national award handed out to a college football player who started his career as a walk-on.

The new Burlsworth Trophy will be officially introduced Monday at a news conference at Arkansas' home stadium. Burlsworth began his career with the Razorbacks as a walk-on but eventually earned a scholarship and became an AP second-team All-American. Burlsworth died in a car wreck in 1999, weeks after he was picked in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.

Danny Ford, who coached Burlsworth at Arkansas, is expected to be on hand Monday, along with former Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles.
