UNC set to begin search for its next AD

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The search committee looking for North Carolina's next athletic director met for the first time knowing it faces a tricky timeline.

The 13-member committee will assist chancellor Holden Thorp in finding a replacement for Dick Baddour, who will step down sometime after the school's appearance before an NCAA infractions committee in October. The new athletic director must be in place in time to hire a permanent football coach after the firing of Butch Davis last month amid an NCAA investigation into improper benefits and academic misconduct.

That coaching hire would have to come in time for the new staff to recruit before national signing day in February.

Committee chairman Lowry Caudill says there is no deadline and that UNC must conduct a thorough, national search for Baddour's successor.
