Arizona State has offered its football head coaching job to Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, the Arizona Republic reported Thursday, although NBC Sports' collegefootballtalk.com reported that a source close to Sumlin claimed that no such offer had been made.
Sumlin has led Houston to a 12-0 record and the No. 6 spot in the current BCS standings. If the Cougars beat Southern Mississippi in the Conference-USA championship game, Houston will earn a berth in a BCS game.
Earlier this week, Sumlin and athletic director Mack Rhoades confirmed that they have begun preliminary discussions on a revamped contract.
A source told collegefootballtalk.com that the report that Sumlin had been offered the ASU job is ???completely false,??? although the source acknowledged that such an offer could be made in the near future.
