WVU's injured Garrison out of Orange Bowl

The Sports Xchange

West .irginia will be without starting running back Dustin Garrison for the Orange Bowl and he will be sidelined for about six months with the injury that will require surgery.

Garrison sprained his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during practice Friday and sustained a slight medial collateral ligament sprain as well in the knee.

The true freshman had a team-leading 742 yards, and scored six touchdowns this season.

"It's an unfortunate situation for Dustin, but it is one that we will have to deal with as a team," coach Dana Holgorsen told reporters.

Holgorsen pointed out the Mountaineers are used to dealing with such issues, as the team had also lost receiver Brad Starks and safety Terence Garvin to knee injuries.

"This marks our third key player out for the bowl game with a knee injury, but I expect our team to maintain its focus as we prepare for Clemson," Holgorsen told reporters.

The Mountaineers could have depth issues at running back in the bowl game. Junior Shawne Alston, who's run for 339 yards, for a 4.4 per-carry average, and 10 touchdowns, should be the main ballcarrier.

Backup Andrew Buie missed the last two games of the regular season due to an injury and Vernard Roberts was booted for the team because of academics this week.
