Bowl Picks, Part IV: Hoping train wreck ends with good final four

by | College Football Insider

NEW ORLEANS -- Only Clemson's defense had a worst week than I did.

The Tigers allowed 70 points in their Orange Bowl loss to West Virginia -- wait, what's that: West Virginia just scored again?

In fact, I'd say Holly Rowe plays better defense than Clemson.

Meanwhile, I was almost as dreadful. I misfired on so many bowl picks last week, even Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden was embarrassed by my accuracy.

Quick disclaimer (i.e. excuse): Of my losses against the point spread last week, seven were by two points or fewer and four occurred when the team I picked allowed a score in the final two minutes. Bottom line was my picks last week smelled worse than Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz at an Insight Bowl practice.

Now after making nearly 350 predictions over the past four months -- and making a 20 percent profit for all of you who have stuck with me the entire season -- we're finally down to the final four picks of the season. The final four bowl games.

One last time: Each pick, for entertainment purposes only, is for 50 Brett Bucks, except for the best bets, worth 100 Brett Bucks. Point spreads from Thursday's USA Today.

Arkansas vs. Kansas State, Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Friday: Fellow Big 12 members Oklahoma and Oklahoma State already have won their bowl games despite being outgained by Iowa and Stanford. But they have nothing on Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, who is the master of losing the yardage battle but still somehow winning the game. Kansas State +7½ is a best bet

Pittsburgh vs. Southern Methodist, BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Saturday: Having trouble keeping track of how many head coaches Pittsburgh has had in the past year? It's easy. The Panthers have had the same number of coaches as victories this season: six. Dave Wannstedt, Phil Bennett, Michael Haywood, Todd Graham, Keith Patterson and Paul Chryst. SMU +3½

Arkansas State vs. Northern Illinois, Bowl in Mobile, Sunday: I just can't wait. When Arkansas State lines up for the game-winning last-second field goal, a Brent Musberger-wanna be TV announcer will remark: "This one is for all the domain names." Arkansas State -1½

LSU vs. Alabama, BCS national title game in New Orleans, Monday: I don't know about you, but I've seen this movie before. LSU +1 is a best bet

Lock of the Week: Grainger Boltlock, Brass Finish #5T724

Last week:
McMurphy's picks: 3-13
"Cover Me": 3-0

Season totals:
Bankroll: Up 1,050 for season; 6,050 balance

"Cover Me": 30-18; +600 (9-8 best bets)
