The Alabama fan who infamously abused an unconscious LSU fan after the BCS Championship game, as captured in a video that went viral, was reportedly arrested by New Orleans police late Thursday night -- with help from the man's cousin, who is an Alabama sheriff.
The Alabama fan was identified as Brian Downing, of Smiths Station, Ala., according to The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune. Downing, 32, was charged with sexual battery and obscenity, according to the report.
After Alabama defeated LSU for the national championship on Jan. 9, a man was videoed rubbing his genitals on the neck of a passed-out LSU fan at Krystal Burger on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, where the game was played. Downing allegedly also exposed himself, as seen in the video. In the video, several people witness the abuse, but no one attempted to stop it.
Heath Taylor, a sheriff in Alabama's Russell County, said he was the second cousin of Downing. After viewing the video, he said the man abusing the LSU fan seemed to be his cousin.
"So then I went out there and looked at it and was, like, you have to be kidding me," Taylor said, according to the Times-Picayune. "It is a shock that it happened as an Alabama fan. It is a shocker that it is my family. It is out of character for Brian.
"I would never in a million years have dreamed he would have done that, period."
Taylor contacted Downing's father and Brian Downing came in for questioning, but instead went to New Orleans after a New Orleans detective told Taylor Downing needed to go there, Taylor told the paper.
