Meyer's recruiting tactics bother some Big Ten coaches

  •

It seems new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has brought some of his Southeastern Conference recruiting tactics to the Big Ten, and some Big Ten coaches don???t particularly like it.

The fact that Ohio State had a recruiting class that was ranked as the third best in the country by Scout.com and fourth by Rivals.com may have had something to do with it.

???There are a few things that happened early on that I made people aware of that I didn???t want to see in this league, that I had seen take place in other leagues,??? Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema told CBS Chicago. ???Other recruiting tactics, other recruiting practices that are illegal.?? I was very up front and was very pointed to the fact, actually reached out to Coach Meyer and shared my thoughts and concerns with him. The situation got rectified.???

Michigan State's Mark Dantonio was less diplomatic.

"(Ohio State has) a new coach, and it's different," Dantonio told the Detroit News. ???I would say it's pretty unethical, in the end."??

Apparently, the issue revolves around verbal commitments. Coaches in the SEC don???t believe they mean anything, and they will continue to recruit a player just as hard after he???s committed to another school.

Only when the letter of intent is signed to make the commitment official is the recruitment of the player over. Meyer, who previous coached at Florida of the SEC, signed eight players who had previously verbally committed to other schools.

By the way, the SEC has won the last six national championships, while the Big Ten has not done so well.
