West Virginia cancels Florida State football game

  •

West Virginia has gone ahead with its plan to cancel its Sept. 8 football game at Florida State, and will pay the school a $350,000 escape fee.

Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman acknowledged the move to reporters Saturday.

Spetman had earlier told the Tallahassee Democrat of West Virginia's possible plan to cancel the game. The Mountaineers have been hoping to get out of the Big East by next season to join the Big 12 and were adjusting their schedule.

The game was to be the first of a home-and-home series in the next two seasons.

Florida State has eight ACC games on its schedule for next year and three remaining non-conference games. Spetman will have to add a fourth to fill the Sept. 8 spot.
