Alabama's 2011 BCS national championship trophy shattered into thousands of pieces on Saturday when the father of a current Crimson Tide player accidentally knocked the trophy off its pedestal, Alabama Live reported Monday.

The Alabama athletic department declined to name the person who caused the accident, but apparently he tripped on a rug and fell into the trophy, which was on display inside Mal Moore Athletic Facility after Saturday's A-Day spring game.

The Waterford Crystal trophy, which the Alabama players held aloft after beating LSU 21-0 in the national title game, is valued at $30,000, and the school plans to replace it.

This is not the first time a championship trophy has been broken. Orson Charles accidentally knocked over Florida's 2008 championship trophy during a recruiting visit. Charles wound up at Georgia.
