South .arolina received a failure-to-monitor penalty Friday that includes self-imposed sanctions of three lost scholarships each of the next two years for the football program and a reduction of more than half of its official recruiting visits next year.

The NCAA also announced that it fined the school $18,500 but that the sanctions do not include a postseason ban or forfeiture of games.

The Committee on Infractions noted the athletic department???s cooperation in the investigation, saying it sent beyond the norm.

???The university regrets the past actions and decisions by individuals that resulted in violations of NCAA legislation,??? South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman said. ???We are pleased, however, that the Committee on Infractions found the corrective actions we have taken and the penalties we have self-imposed reflect the university???s commitment to full compliance with NCAA rules.???

South Carolina athletes received more than $59,000 in impermissible benefits, according to the NCAA. More than $51,000 was the result of athletes living in a local hotel at a drastically reduced rate for an extended period.

The NCAA also alleged that two boosters running a foundation provided more than $8,000 in improper benefits for recruiting visits. The university disassociated itself from three boosters.

The loss of three football scholarships in 2013 and 2014 will reduce the number to 82 and official visits to prospective recruits will be cut from 56 to 30 during the 2012-13 school year.
