Ohio State has a hole to fill at the top of its 2013 football schedule.
Vanderbilt has notified Ohio State that it's backing out of the season opener scheduled for Aug. 31, 2013, against the Buckeyes, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith announced Thursday.
In the Buckeyes' place, the Commodores will now open with Southeastern Conference opponent Mississippi at home on Aug. 31. The SEC released its schedule for next season on Thursday.
Vanderbilt, which will play seven home games next year, also dropped non-conference games against Northwestern in 2013 and 2014.
Smith said Ohio State is working on a replacement game. The Buckeyes have non-conference games scheduled against Florida A&M, California and Buffalo next September.
