Florida's Great Quarterbacks
Since 1990, four Florida quarterbacks have thrown for at least 9,000 career yards and all but one finished in the top five of the Heisman voting -- Chris Leak. But, Leak can add national champion next to his name. Only one other player can claim that in school history -- Wuerffel in 1996.
A look at Leak's career compared to Wuerffel, Matthews and Grossman:

| Comment: Leak owns Florida career records in passing attempts, passing completions and yards. His 88 career touchdowns are second only to Danny Wuerffel's 114. Leak become Florida's all-time career leader in passing yards with an 189-yard performance against Arkansas in the SEC Championship. With his win at Florida State, Leak became the only starting QB in school history to win in Knoxville, against Georgia, in Tallahasee, in Baton Rouge and win a bowl game. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Comment: Easily one of the best quarterbacks of the 1990s. Ended his career as the most efficient quarterback in NCAA history, edging out Ty Detmer from BYU (1988-91). When he left college, he had thrown 114 career touchdowns, 40 more than any other QB in SEC history. He claimed the 1996 Heisman Trophy and was a two-time winner of the Davey O'Brien quarterback of the year award. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shane Matthews (1989-1992) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Comment: Matthews set 50 school and 19 SEC records while playing three seasons under Steve Spurrier. He compiled a 28-8 career record as a starting quarterback, including a 19-4 mark in SEC games. He guided the Gators to their first official SEC championship in 1991. After an excellent 1991 season, he finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Rex Grossman (2000-02) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Comment: Despite playing only three season at Florida, is ranked third in school history in career passing yards. His career passing efficiency of 146.8 ranks 19th in NCAA history. He finished second in the 2001 Heisman Trophy balloting, becoming only the fifth sophomore ever to finish second.
