Top 25 roundup: Louisiana Tech surprises No. 17 Fresno State

RUSTON, La. -- Ryan Moats scored his fourth touchdown with less than four minutes left and finished with in 236 yards rushing to lead Louisiana Tech to a 28-21 upset of No. 17 Fresno State on Saturday night.

Moats, who entered as the nation's fifth-leading rusher, scored from 8 yards with 3:20 remaining, helping Tech beat a ranked team for the second time in school history.

A two-touchdown favorite, Fresno State led 21-20 with four minutes left and was trying to run out the clock. But Byron Santiago intercepted a pass by Paul Pinegar and returned it to the 16. Moats scored the game-winner two plays later, and Matt Kubik hit Eric Newman for the two-point conversion to make it a seven-point game with about three minutes left. Full story

No. 4 Miami 27, Georgia Tech 3

ATLANTA -- Brock Berlin threw three touchdown passes and Frank Gore rushed for 115 yards as Miami beat Georgia Tech in the Hurricanes' first ACC road game.

Playing without P.J. Daniels, the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading rusher, Georgia Tech was shut down by Miami's tough defense, which forced four turnovers. Miami, fourth in the nation in scoring defense, has allowed only one offensive touchdown in four games.

There had been calls for Miami (4-0, 2-0 ACC) to make a change at quarterback after Berlin threw only two touchdown passes in his first three games. But Berlin was sharp Saturday, completing 10 of 20 passes for 200 yards with no interceptions.

No. 10 California 49, Oregon State 7

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A long layoff didn't slow California.

The Golden Bears (3-0, 1-0 Pac-10) jumped out to a 28-7 lead over Oregon State before halftime and never let up in a rout of the Beavers (1-4, 0-2).

Chase Lyman had five catches for a career-high 176 yards and three touchdowns, while Aaron Rodgers completed 12 of 16 passes for 140 yards and three scores.

No. 18 Minnesota 16, Penn State 7

MINNEAPOLIS -- Laurence Maroney ran for 144 yards and a touchdown and Minnesota overcame Penn State's scrappy defense to beat the Nittany Lions.

The Gophers recorded their second straight 5-0 start since 1940-41 and have won four in a row against Penn State. But Minnesota's offense, which entered the game averaging 44 points, stalled frequently against the Lions.

While Maroney set a school record with his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game, the Lions helped limit Minnesota's powerful backfield by holding Marion Barber III to 88 yards on 21 carries and one score. Bryan Cupito went 8-for-18 for 113 yards and an interception for the Gophers (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten).
