'Canes, Sooners to play for first time in nearly 20 years

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Miami Hurricanes and Oklahoma Sooners will renew their football rivalry in 2007 after a hiatus of nearly 20 years.

The teams will play at Oklahoma on Sept. 8, 2007, and in Miami on Sept. 12, 2009, officials said Thursday.

"This will be a great series played by two of college football's legendary teams," Miami athletic director Paul Dee said.

The teams played in the 1985-87 seasons, with Miami winning all three games. The Hurricanes clinched the national championship by beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 1988, and the Sooners won the 1985 title despite the loss to Miami.

"We have great enthusiasm for games of this stature," Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "The previous matchups between our two schools have been legendary, and we have great respect for the Miami program."
