Sports agent charged with Alabama violation
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A Virginia man surrendered to authorities Monday on charges accusing him of contacting Alabama football player Tyrone Prothro without properly registering as an agent.
A statement by the Alabama attorney general's office said Jason Goggins of Savage Sports Management in Newport News, Va., solicited Prothro while the player was still in the hospital after he broke his leg during the Florida game last October.
Goggins, 33, was charged in a two-count indictment with failure to register as a sports agent in Alabama and contacting an athlete before registering.
Goggins and the chief executive of the company, Raymond L. Savage Jr., did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.
Neither Prothro nor the university were accused of any wrongdoing.
Chris King, in charge of compliance with NCAA rules at Alabama, declined comment on whether the university alerted authorities about case.
"We followed the procedures as set out under the law," he said.
