Houston Nutt did everything to ruin his coaching career.
Not just get fired, never get hired again.
It looked like that all the way back in December 2005, when Nutt hired a
high school coach to coordinate Arkansas'
offense.
Arkansas' season picked up steam with a surprise victory at Auburn in October. (US PRESSWIRE)
And then it got worse.
Worse as in a 36-point home loss in the season opener. Worse as in using
three starting quarterbacks. Worse as in losing the starting fullback
and five defensive starters to injury. Worse as in all this coming off
consecutive losing seasons.
Nutt wasn't trying to win the SEC, he was auditioning for The
Producers.
Springtime for Porkers?
Actually, big time for Nutt, certainly the SEC's coach of the year.
Maybe even the national coach of the year. Not that he deserves all --
or even most of -- the credit as the Hogs chase their first conference
title in 17 years.
Sometimes Nutt trusted that former high school coach. Remember the
single wing? More on that later.
Sometimes things just worked out, like the September afternoon when
Alabama kicker Leigh Tiffin gagged in Razorback Stadium. How else do you
describe three missed field goals and a missed extra point?
Politely, if you're Mike Shula.
"It's tough to swallow," the former 'Bama coach said.
