Zips report: Notes, quotes
--The Zips will have an interesting battle at quarterback next season. Junior Matt Rodgers graduated in December and elected not to return. The loss of Rodgers is a big loss, with Patrick Nicely the lone returnee. Nicely started all 12 games in 2010, but took several big hits and was hampered by a weak running game and offensive line.
--Freshman Dylan Potts was a backup quarterback in 2010, but was moved to wide receiver. Potts will spend spring practice learning his new position.
SPRING SNAPSHOT
Practice begins/ends: March 23/April 16.
Practice priorities: The Zips must shore up their offense to help the defense. Last year Akron struggled running the ball and committed too many turnovers, forcing the defense to stay on the field for an extended period of time. Akron quarterback Patrick Nicely is the lone returner at his position and must battle a big turnover on the offensive side after the loss of standout receiver Jeremy LaFrance and tailback Alex Allen. The Zips must build some depth along the offensive and defensive lines, and find some playmakers on offense.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I am excited about this class. We have helped ourselves in all areas. We signed a class of players consistent with our vision of recruiting within the footprint of our league." -- Akron coach Rob Ianello on his signing class.
