Zips report: Strategy and personnel

KEY LOSSES
The Zips took several big hits on offense. They lost their leading rusher, Alex Allen, and wide receiver, Jeremy LaFrance. Considering Akron averaged just 15.6 points a game, coach Rob Ianello focused on adding playmakers and depth to the offensive line. The defense gave up 35.1 points a game, but the addition of 11 signees on the defensive end adds help in the near future. Ianello concentrated on the defensive line and linebackers, with linebackers Nick Rossi and Justin March solid additions.

PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2011:

LB Brian Wagner -- A widely successful player in his first two years, Wagner enters his final two years eyeing to lead the Zips to a winning season. Wagner led the Zips with 130 tackles in 2010. A playmaker with the ability to play at the next level, Wagner is rock on defense.

QB Patrick Nicely -- The lone returning quarterback from last year, Nicely struggled finding consistency in part because of the lack of playmakers on offense and issues along the offensive line. Nicely threw 13 interceptions and 10 touchdowns last year. He should be helped by the addition of several offensive linemen signed by coach Rob Ianello.

DB Manley Waller -- The senior emerged into a solid contributor in 2010, finishing third on the team in tackles with 52. Waller had six tackles for a loss and two interceptions.

DE Hasan Hazime -- The senior is an integral player on the defensive line. Hazime needs to provide leadership and build upon a solid 2010 season in which he finished with two and a half sacks and 46 tackles.

PLAYER NOTES

--QB Matt Rodgers graduated in December and elected to leave the program. Rodgers showed flashes in his career, but was hurt by injuries. He played in just three games last year, but completed 7-of-11 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. The loss of Rodgers leaves Patrick Nicely as the lone returning quarterback.

--QB Dylan Potts was moved to wide receiver. Potts didn't attempt a pass last year, but rushed the ball four times for 20 yards.
