--If nothing else, Arizona State should get an immediate impact from this recruiting class from punter Josh Hubner of Scottsdale Community College. He will replace senior Trevor Hankins. "You have to have a punter," coach Dennis Erickson said. "If you don't, you have problems. He's a guy from here, and he has a strong leg. We're excited about him."
--QB Samson Szakacsy, who would have been a senior in 2011, won't return. He said it wasn't about his third-string status; he told the Arizona Republic he was just ready to move on to other interests. He also has battled shoulder problems in the past couple of years. "The toughest part about this is I just love the team so much," Szakacsy told the newspaper. "I've been playing football since I was a little kid, so there's always going to be that attachment, but this is something I feel like I got to do."
Practice begins/ends: March 22/April 23
Practice priorities: There shouldn't be much drama in terms of position battles ... well, except for one. Steven Threet won the starting quarterback job before last season and started the first 11 games, but he suffered a concussion in the second-to-last game of the season. Brock Osweiler stepped in and performed well, showing uncommon mobility for someone 6-foot-8 and helping the team beat rival Arizona in the season finale. Threet had his moments -- completing 61.9 percent of his passes for 2,534 yards -- but he also threw 16 interceptions and struggled with his decision-making. It looks as if the starting job will be a competition, again.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"You take him and Mike, and I don't know if there's a team in the country that signed two quarterbacks as good as we did. ... To me, one quarterback might be worth two or three recruits, depending on how good they are." -- Coach Dennis Erickson, on QB signees Michael Eubank and Mike Bercovici.
