Eagles report: Inside slant

Inside slant · Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes

The one thing you kept hearing as Boston College reeled off five straight wins to make it to another bowl game, the 12th straight, was about how young the Eagles were, especially on offense.

Freshman quarterback. Freshman running back. Freshmen wide receivers.

Well, all those guys will be sophomores in 2011 and the freshman running back, Andre Williams, goes back to No. 2 as Montel Harris returns from injury. The recruiting class was strong, there is depth, the coach is armed with a contract extension. Things continue to look up.

Coach Frank Spaziani, two years into his tenure as a head coach, unveiled a class of 23 players on Signing Day. When he got the head job, he saw a roster that had holes on both lines, even on offense, the signature position of this program. He then added five offensive linemen and six on the defensive side.

"We feel like we've got the numbers where we want them and we can move forward," he said as the class was announced.

The Eagles, who already have Luke Kuechly heading an outstanding linebacking corps, added five more to the mix, in a class that was ranked No. 35 in the country by Scout.com and No. 38 by Rivals.

TOP OF THE CLASS

DB Al Louis-Jean (Brockton H.S., Brockton, Mass. -- A four-start recruit stays home, just as local talent and current DB Jim Noel did two years ago. He was the No. 9-ranked cornerback in the country and many big schools, like Notre Dame and Stanford to name two, were after him. He had five touchdown catches on offense and four interceptions on defense this past year. He is already in school and will be at spring practice.

DE Mehdi Abdesmad (Cegep Du Vieux H.S., Montreal -- The Eagles have a need up front on defense and this kid is also already enrolled in school and will also take part in spring ball. The 6-6, 260-pounder chose BC over UConn and Baylor.

TE Brian Miller (Andover H.S., Andover, Mass.) -- Rivals had him as the No. 1 prospect in Massachusetts and the No. 8 tight end prospect in the country. At least four ACC schools, including North Carolina, were also after him.
