Eagles report: Notes, quotes

--QB Dave Shinskie rebounded from a dismal start and had a strong second half in the win over Kent State that preceded BC's bye week.

"I just looked at the tape with (offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill) and he did some nice things," coach Frank Spaziani said. "He still frustrates us in some areas, but he did some nice things and he showed some improvement.

"Whether he's going to be able to get to where we need him? He's got to show that. ... Things are going to get real heated."

--LB Luke Kuechly, the 2009 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, was named ACC defensive lineman of the week after a 10-tackle performance against Kent State. That marked the 11th straight game in double-figure tackles for Kuechly, the longest such streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

--BC is 2-0 for the sixth time in the last seven years, including the last two.

--The Eagles, off in Week 3, don't play a road game until Oct. 9 when they visit North Carolina State and former Eagles coach Tom O'Brien. They host Virginia Tech on Sept. 25 and Notre Dame on Oct. 2.

SEASON SUMMARY
The Eagles have opened the season with a pair of home victories, first beat Football Championship Subdivision Weber State and Kent State.

The offense didn't look great in either game, picking it up in the second half against Kent, while the defense couldn't get off the field in the opener and was better against Kent State.

In short, BC has looked like a team that's looking for answers, using the bye week to try to get things together.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Eagles have to be better, much better, to survive from here on, especially in the next two weeks as Virginia Tech and Notre Dame come calling to finish off the run of four straight home games to start the season.

The offense has to find some consistency and the defense has to play the way it did against Kent State.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"There are signs that we can make plays and that's good. There are little flashes, not enough, but there are little flashes that we can build on. The stuff that's a concern to me is that we still don't have an identity. This team hasn't given me an idea of who they are. ... We need to get the leadership and they need to take ownership of the team." -- BC coach Frank Spaziani as his team hit the bye week.
