Falcons report: Inside slant

Inside slant · Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes

After going 2-10 in 2010, Bowling Green head coach Dave Clawson was looking to add speed and athleticism to his team. The 10 losses were the most in school history and the Falcons went 1-7 in the Mid-American Conference.

To that end the Falcons recruited the state of Florida for the first time in Clawson's three years at Bowling Green and signed seven recruits. In the 21-member recruiting class, Ohio was right behind Florida with six recruits.

"We have to get faster as a program," Clawson said. "In the first two recruiting classes we built a very good base of players and this year was about (filling) specific needs ... We wanted to get defensive backs and offensive-skilled players."

There are going to be very few secure jobs when spring practice starts as Clawson will be looking to upgrade across the board. There should be plenty of new faces in the secondary, and on the offensive and defensive lines.

In an effort to upgrade the offensive line right away, the Falcons brought in five offensive linemen. Of the new linemen, two are junior college players and a third is from a prep school. All three are enrolled at Bowling Green for the current semester.

TOP OF THE CLASS

--DB Johnny Joseph (St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) -- St. Thomas Aquinas went undefeated in 2010 and won a Florida state championship and the national high school championship. Joseph led the team with 12 pass breakups and added two interceptions as a senior.

--WR Herve Coby (American Heritage, Delray Beach, Fla.) -- Coby's high school team advanced to back-to-back state championship games, winning the title his junior year. Coby posted 66 receptions for 1,202 yards and 15 touchdowns combined in his junior and senior years.

--RB Anthon Samuel (Monsignor Edward Pace, Opa Locka, Fla.) -- Samuel rushed for 1,441 yards and 23 touchdowns and made five interceptions as a senior.
