SCOUTING THE OFFENSE
The Cougars figure to be a much stronger unit than they were when they faced the Bruins way back in Week 2 of the season. QB Max Hall was making only the second start of his career, and RB Harvey Unga had yet to establish himself as the featured back. Now that both are playing with the benefit of a season's worth of experience, expect them to better exploit the UCLA defense. They still have a tendency to turn the ball over and must play a cleaner game than the three-turnover game BYU had in Los Angeles in September.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE
LB Bryan Kehl and DE Jan Jorgensen had yet to establish themselves as the disrupters on the defense the last time the Cougars played the Bruins. Jorgensen has come into his own as one of the premier defensive linemen in the conference. If he can apply pressure while BYU plays the bend-but-don't-break strategy in the secondary, UCLA will be hard-pressed to match the 27-point effort of its first game. If the Cougars can't get pressure with their front four, the Bruins may be able to take advantage of their athletic ability at the receiver position.

MATCHUP TO WATCH
The first time the two teams met, the Bruins grabbed a 20-0 lead to take the BYU rushing attack out of the game. The Cougars have become a much more physical running team since then, and the Bruins will have a hard time slowing down RB Harvey Unga, who will come right at the heart of their defense. When he rests, Manase Tonga and Fui Vakapuna will do the same. If BYU can turn the game into a grind-it-out affair, it should have the upper hand.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"On any given year, it gives you a chance because teams are not identical, nor is our opponent identical, and I've learned something with each bowl preparation. Certainly, we made quite a jump from year one to year two. This team has a little different model; they don't take as much work. They practice just so hard. We're looking to gain momentum going into the game. Some teams overwork their players, so I think we're just about right at this point." -- Coach Bronco Mendenhall, to the Deseret Morning News, on bowl preparations.

I am a total homer and always hold reasons to think BYU will win. But it appears everyone believes, including several around this board, Sooners will destroy BYU to debris. Some would grant Cougars might give a fight in the first half. I think all we need is keep Hall safe and abled to pass and, then, perform good on D to moderate Oklahoma pistols. Yeah, I am a total homer. Go Cougars

Today, I noticed that Scout.com ranked 9 BYU recruits as two stars, but did not assign a rank to those players for their positions.  Does this mean that they have already been ranked as two stars, or that they havent been ranked but Scout is assuming that they are at least two stars since they are commits.  It just confused me that Scout would all of the sudden rank 9 recruits ...(more)

I am going to three games at BYU this year the Florida St, TCU, and Utah games.  Does BYU have any tailgate parties before games that don't mind who comes?  I had a freind that tried to find one last year he said it was hard to find and when he did find one they got pissed at him for trying to join in.  I have a fourteen year old that is a die hard BYU fan, even though I try and con ...(more)

(POLL)

Out of the sheer bordom of the offseason I thought it might be fun to look all the way to the end of the season. So the question is how many games will the Cougars win this year?

I don't know about all of you, but I am excited the Heaps is verbally commiting to BYU.  It is great that we are signing a high caliber player coming to add to the high powered offense at the Y.  Now, lets see if the recruiter can find some great WR's for him to connect with in the future.

It's great that the Y has someone to follow up what Max Hall has done to help bri

You guys have the best chance of winning the MWC this year, but you will manage tp pull a home lose to TCU and perhaps lose to Air Force or Utah. I think BYU will take 2nd this year, with TCU winning the MWC. Air Force will be 3rd then followed by either Utah or UNLV.

I was just posting something over on the Ute board about the game with Oregon, and it got me thinking. As BYU fans, which games are you circling on your calendars as "must-see" regular season games this year? Plus a small commentary as to why, if you want. I haven't put any in-depth thought into this, but to start here's my list off the top of my head:

1) BSU-Oregon 9/3 - I

It's been confirmed that Jake Heaps will make his commitment to BYU known.  The No. 1 QB prospect as rated by Scout.  That is huge!

Second, it's also been confirmed there will be two other guys giving verbals to BYU at the press conference, one of which might be Ross Apo, a 4-star receiver who had earlier committed to Texas.  Apo and Heaps have been and remain very good f

5. Colorado State
6. UNLV
7. New Mexico
8. Wyoming
9. San Diego State

How I think the MWC media days will pick it:

BYU had perhaps its best recruiting day ever.  Though the football program has had a history of finding top notch talent, its been extraordinarily rare to have three nationally recruited prospects commit in one day.  Today BYU received commits from QB Heaps, who is a 4/5 star QB that has excellent close/intermediate range accuracy and quick feet.  He is already taller than Hall, and ...(more)

I just picked up a copy of Phil Steele's magazine and he listed the top 40 teams and had BYU at #15 and TCU at #18 and Utah not in the top 40.  I could very well see this senario but I would like to see BYU a couple spots higher so they grab a BCS invite.  At least one team from our conference should be in the top 12 to grab that BCS birth each year or at least 3 out of 4 years.  Bu ...(more)

For those posters who weren't around the main CBS board last year, a group of football fans, angry about the BCS, got together and formed The Best D*** Poll in the Land to give the fans a voice in the top 25 voting system.  Last year, TBDPITL had 40 solid members who turned in their top 25 picks every week, and posted them on the boards for all to see.  All ballots were counted and ...(more)

How do you think byu will play against oklahoma? Trying not to be a biased byu fan, i still think we will put up a fight. I doubt that we we win, but you never know. As long as we put up a fight we can still "bust the bcs"
