Chippewas report: Notes, quotes
--QB Dan LeFevour is the centerpiece of the Chippewas' high-octane offense and showed in the spring game that he is already in mid-season form, completing 13-16 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in limited duty. LeFevour opened the spring game by throwing incompletions on his first two efforts but quickly hit stride, throwing nine straight completions at one point, including a 39-yard TD strike to TE Rocky Weaver.
--WR Antonio Brown put on a dazzling offensive display in the Chips' spring game, recording a 58-yard TD on a swing pass from backup QB Brian Brunner and then later Brown and Brunner connected again for a six-yard scoring strike. Brown finished with 97 yards receiving.
SPRING MOVERS
RB Carl Volny -- The redshirt sophomore had an opportunity to show the coaches he was ready for a bigger role with starters Justin Hoskins and Ontario Sneed limited due to injuries and made the most of his opportunity. Volny currently finds himself at the top of the Chippewas' depth chart and has emerged as a potential starter after showing flashes of big play ability in the spring. Volny took the majority of snaps during spring and earned the confidence of his coaches that he could handle a starter's workload.
WLB Mike Petrucci -- Petrucci, a redshirt freshman, made huge strides in spring and emerged as a potential starter in the Chips' linebacking corps as CMU looks to replace two starters from last season with the loss of Red Keith and Ike Brown.
WR Jean Pitts -- Pitts, a junior, took reps at every receiving position in the spring due to injuries and earned high praise from the coaching staff. While still likely a backup behind the likes of Antonio Brown, Bryan Anderson (who was sidelined with a shoulder injury) and Taylor Bradley, Pitts has likely worked his way into the rotation. Pitts recorded 26 yards on three receptions in the Chips' annual spring game.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"The guys know what they have to do now and what is expected of them. They have a very important summer with the conditioning program where we have to continue to make strides. We had a good spring, but the summer is the next step." -- Central Michigan head coach Butch Jones.
