Huskies report: Strategy and personnel
KEY LOSSES
Jordan Todman is the obvious one, as the UConn running back gave up his final year of eligibility to test the NFL Draft waters. Coach Randy Edsall was a key loss as well, though new hire Paul Pasqualoni kept the damage to a minimum in the short term by hanging on to all but one of Edsall's recruits.
But another area that suffered a lot of attrition was the linebacking corps. With Lawrence Wilson, Scott Lutrus and Greg Lloyd all graduating, part of spring practice will be devoted to figuring out who can replace them in the lineup.
PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2011:
DT Kendall Reyes -- Reyes thought about leaving early for the NFL, but decided to come back for his senior season instead. He'll be the key pillar of stability on the defensive line again in 2011.
RB Robbie Frey -- Frey will get first crack at the starting running back spot vacated when Jordan Todman declared for the NFL draft. He has the explosive speed to make an impact, but the question mark remains whether he has the durability to handle the workload demanded of an every-down back, considering his battle with injuries over the past couple of seasons.
LB Sio Moore -- When Moore was at his best in 2010, he was one of the top linebackers in the Big East. The task for the rising redshirt junior will be sustaining that level of play on a weekly basis in 2011. He'll have to, given that fellow starters Scott Lutrus and Lawrence Wilson won't be alongside him, since both graduate during the offseason.
CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson -- For someone thrust into the lineup when teammate Jasper Howard was killed in a fight in 2009, Wreh-Wilson has grown to become a solid cornerback. He showed flashes of being a shutdown corner in 2009, and he's still got two more years of eligibility beginning with the 2011 season opener.
PLAYER NOTES
--S Mike Lang has left the UConn program. Academic issues sidelined him for the Fiesta Bowl, and he apparently will look to continue his football career elsewhere.
--RB Lyle McCombs was suspended from the team indefinitely in January. The freshman was arrested and charged with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.
--DT Kendall Reyes is returning to Storrs for his senior season. Former coach Randy Edsall had submitted a request for information on his behalf to the NFL regarding his likely draft position, and the answer apparently was not enough for Reyes to forgo his final year of eligibility.
