Seminoles report: Strategy and personnel
LOOKING GOOD
Although Christian Ponder threw four interceptions, the offense scored enough points to keep a lead and got a solid effort from the receivers in catching the ball. The Seminoles also converted both red-zone chances. Equally important, this was one of Florida State's most disciplined games in many seasons. The Seminoles were flagged for six penalties, but for only 37 yards, avoiding a 15-yard personal foul or any other major penalty. All in all, take away the bad throws from Ponder and Florida State did enough offensively to win the game.
STILL NEEDS WORK
Well, say this for Florida State's defense. The 'Noles played consistently, allowing 241 yards rushing, 242 yards passing. A nice 483 yards in total offense for Clemson, including the career-high 165 yards rushing by C.J. Spiller. Despite knowing how Clemson would attack with Spiller, the Seminoles still couldn't stop him, and their inadequacies on defense were on full display again.
ROSTER REPORT
--QB Christian Ponder (shoulder, ribs) will be further examined Monday to reassess his situation, but it does not look good for his status the rest of the season. So much will depend on if the Seminoles beat Wake Forest and still have a chance to finish 6-6.
The injury will Ponder's 22-game streak as the starting quarterback. It also quells any thought Ponder may have given to considering the NFL Draft. He now would be best served by coming back next season and staying healthy to try to lead this team out of its misery.
His replacement, E.J. Manuel, has played only sparingly this season. He has attempted only two passes, both incomplete.
--OT Andrew Datko (shoulder, elbow) may also be sidelined, although Florida State has given no official word on his status. His absence would force a shakeup on the offensive line.
