Yellow Jackets report: Inside slant

Inside slant · Notes, quotes · Strategy and personnel

Coming off a 6-7 season, Georgia Tech needed a major infusion of talent.

Only time will tell whether the Yellow Jackets' 22 signees fill the bill.

But there's no denying Tech addressed major needs at linebacker and offensive line. Tech signed eight players at linebacker, including one who might move to long-snapper, and four offensive linemen.

Jabari Hunt-Days and Anthony Harrell are two linebackers who could make an immediate impact in coordinator Al Groh's 3-4 scheme.

The most exciting addition was quarterback Vad Lee, who guided his high school team in North Carolina to a 16-0 season. For Lee it's a matter of when, not if, he'll take over the offense.

Some fans were troubled by the fact that Tech lost five players who had been committed to the Yellow Jackets. Others were upset Tech only signed 10 players from Georgia, including just four of the top 50 in the state.

"Recruiting's a contact sport," coach Paul Johnson said. "Bottom line is the kid wants to come to your place or he doesn't. We're looking for guys who want to be at Georgia Tech and want to be in the program. Not everybody wants to come to Georgia Tech, just like everybody doesn't want to go to Florida or Alabama."

Tech's difficult academic requirements limit the number of players Johnson's staff can target.

"We didn't get everybody we tried to recruit but we got a good group that will help to propel our football team forward," he said. "It's a relief but you start on next year."

TOP OF THE CLASS

QB Vad Lee (Hillside High, Durham, N.C.) -- The 6-2, 210-pounder isn't likely to play much as a freshman, but he has all the tools to lead Tech back to the top of the ACC. An ideal fit for coach Paul Johnson's option attack, Lee threw for 3,223 yards and 30 touchdowns and ran for 1,300 yards and 22 scores while leading Hillside to its first state title in 66 years.

OLB Jabari Hunt-Days (Hillgrove High, Powder Springs, Ga.) -- Hunt-Days, rated No. 29 at his position by Scout.com, looks like a perfect fit for coordinator Al Groh's 3-4 scheme. The 6-3, 235-pounder has been clocked at 4.65 in the forty. He'll join his older brother, redshirt freshman quarterback Synjyn Days, as a Yellow Jacket.

OT Errin Joe (Lake Gibson High, Lakeland, Fla.) - The 6-4, 295-pounder is rated No. 31 at his position by Scout.com. He's a very mobile run-blocker who should thrive in Johnson's offense. Phil Smith is the only returning tackle with significant experience, so Joe could play early.
