THIS WEEK'S GAME: Ole Miss at Memphis, Sept. 6 -- The Rebels are ranked No. 8 in the AP preseason poll and No. 10 in the USA Today coaches poll. Last season, they knocked off eventual national champion Florida in The Swamp and finished the year with a six-game winning streak, including a 47-34 victory over Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. Senior quarterback Jevan Snead (2,762 yards, 26 touchdowns) is on the short list of Heisman Trophy candidates.

KEYS TO THE GAME
The Memphis receiving tandem of Carlos Singleton (19) and Duke Calhoun (14) enters 2009 with the third-most career touchdown receptions in the FBS. Ole Miss ranked dead last in the SEC last season in pass defense, allowing 221.7 yards per game through the air and 18 touchdown passes.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

RB Curtis Steele -- The junior-college transfer made a major impact in his first season in 2008, earning C-USA Newcomer of the Year honors as the first Tiger since DeAngelo Williams to run for more than 1,000 yards in a season.

WR Duke Calhoun -- The senior enters 2009 with a streak of 37 consecutive games with at least one reception, the nation's third-longest active streak.

LB Greg Jackson -- The senior was an All-C-USA honorable mention pick last season and was the team's Defensive Player of the Year with four sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss.

ROSTER REPORT

--Former Florida State LB Marcus Ball, younger brother of Georgia Tech QB Reggie Ball and a transfer from Pearl River (Miss.) Community College, has been cleared academically to join the team and practiced for the first time Saturday. He is expected to play safety for the Tigers.

--Junior slot receiver Billy Foster suffered a fractured right ankle during an Aug. 20 scrimmage and will miss the 2009 season. The speedy junior-college transfer had 1,252 all-purpose yards in 2008 at California's College of the Sequoias.

--Sophomore RB Brandon Ross transferred to South Alabama and senior DE Demetrius Culpepper left the program for personal reasons.

--Senior kicker/punter Matt Reagan has been limited in practice while recovering from a hip flexor problem, the same injury that sidelined him for several games in 2008.
