It was a spring of change at Notre Dame.

Maybe not so much on the field, but there are a couple of big-picture, program-defining themes at play, the foremost of which is the stated desire of coach Charlie Weis to be more accessible, more involved in the whole team ... basically, to be kinder, gentler.

Toward that end, he ceded play-calling duties to coordinator Mike Haywood so that the head coach could focus on being the head coach of everyone -- not just the quarterbacks and the rest of the offense.

"You have to make sure you're actually giving the guys an opportunity to do it, that you're not just being superficial about what you're doing," Weis said.

Not much is expected to change in the scheme as sophomore quarterback Jimmy Clausen is back as the starter after a mostly rough debut season. Last year, though, he was battling for a starting spot and trying to learn a new offense. Things are much more comfortable this time around.

"Last spring, each and every day was a new install and you had to remember the stuff from the other day. It was just piling on top of each other," Clausen told the Chicago Tribune. "This spring, it was a lot easier. You were just trying to get the little bits and pieces down."

The other big change was on defense, with the addition of former Georgia Tech coordinator Jon Tenuta. He will bring a more attacking, blitzing style. Notre Dame, with better speed in its younger classes, will be able to play faster on defense.

In all, it was a productive spring for a team trying to erase the stench of a 3-9 season. Notre Dame is not nearly as good as it might be in 2009 and beyond, but there will be improvement this season.

Might not be a lot of action on this thread today. Not a lot to play for except pride at home and senior day.

Where has this offense been the last 2 games. Good way to get the red zone bugs out early.

IMHO, Charlie Weis was worth the risk. The Irish were rebuffed(or just blind-sided by Florida) by Urban Meyer and were scrambling to find a name and someone they felt shared the same values and work ethic of Notre Dame University and it's base. Their hiring of Willingham was a bad one, fraught with political pressure and correctness, not with merit. They needed to look strong and bring in someone ...(more)

Found this on rivals: http://notredame.rivals.com/content

It's an interview with Brian Polian. Most of his answers seem to imply that he either already knows this coaching staff is done after this season or he expects that they're going to be gone after this season. I don't ...(more)

I think Jack Swarbrick should retain Charlie Weis as the head coach. I will give my reasoning in a moment. I give Swarbrick a lot of credit. He has not come out and said anything during this time except to say the program will be evaluated at the end of the year. He also said the wins and losses are not the only measure of the football program (or any other sports program). That is someone I ...(more)

First, I am not an ND fan, but I am from the Chicagoland area, and I have been following Hughes.  The kid has looked good in my eyes, and I have seen him really move the pile when he gets the ball.  Other than the fact that I don't like Charlie because he is pompous, the fact that he has not used Hughes as much as he should is my litmus test that Charlie is not a good coach.  Keep C ...(more)

Hey I'm from SoCal and a big ND fan. Live out by Loyola where Barr goes and Oaks Christian and l heard that Barr has committed to ND. This isn't official as no recruiting sites have it but UCLA picked up Malcom Jones the Oaks RB and another great RB Jordan James so Barr has decided to join his dad's alma mater. This isn't official but is still a great pickup as our team spirals downward

I was all over Weis last week on this board talking about let's FIRE HIM NOW. On Saturday afternoon I thought maybe I was a little to hard on the guy cause he is a good OC, and the team can score pts. Plus he went out and got the best DC he could find. I have to give Weis an A+ for trying, he did everything he could for this team and for ND. Then the game started lol, Not onl

So here were are again.. De Ja Vu all over again. ND starts hot and fades once October rolls around...

So what is it? What really is ND and Weis's problem...

Really its Management... What is up with the ND coaching structure? Who is the DC who is the assitant HC who answers to who on D? Too many Chiefs...

ND should have stayed the course with the 3-4. ND can't get

 Jack Swarbrick,
Mr. Swarbrick show some stones and address the press and announce Charlie Weis is my head football coach and this is what we are going to do to challenge for a national championship year in and year out.
 1) I am going to fire all coaches on the defensive side of the ball everybody including special team coaches.
 2) I will hire a defe ...(more)

Has anyone ever thought if ND, ( being a religious instituition for higher learning), forgave O'Leary for his transgressions and allowed him to fullfill the HC duties at ND that he could have had the program back in tip-top shape! The losing we endured the past 8 years never exists and ND is relevant again! Just a thought of "what If" there were no Willingham or Weis years @ ND. ...(more)

The Chicago Sun Times reported today that Bob Stoops has been rumored to be talking to the Irish about becoming the new coach. Although he did not confirm the reports he did not deny it. ESPN has also confirmed that contact has been made between the Irish and Stoops. With these latest developments what do the Irish faithful think? I for one would be happy with Stoops coming in some new blood would ...(more)

I don't know about you but I'm not so sure I want Gruden here, I have nothing against him but he was never a head coach at the college level. Is that ok with you? I want a proven college head coach who took a garbage team and made them into a kick A** machine. To me that say's something. Sometimes these Pro coaches don't work out in College and I'm taken NO chances this time. You c ...(more)

How do we return to the ranks of dominant teams in the near future?  Here is my simple plan.  The University puts up 8 million and finds about 50 angry alumni to finance the rest of the 18 million needed to pay off Charlei Weiss and send him packin.  He's just not the right guy driving the bus.  He has had plenty of time to show us that. He can recruit fairly well, but even wit ...(more)
