Cornhuskers report: Inside slant
Bo Pelini held a teleconference on signing day to discuss Nebraska's 2011 recruiting class of 20 players -- a class most recruiting services rank among the top 20 in the nation.
The bigger news, though, was Pelini being evasive on questions about potential changes on his coaching staff.
During his signing day news conference, new Indiana coach Kevin Wilson revealed that Corey Raymond, whom he'd hired in late December to be in charge of the team's cornerbacks, was leaving for Nebraska to coach the same position. That job has been held by Marvin Sanders.
"I'll address any staff questions at another time," said Pelini, who declined to confirm Wilson's announcement. "This is not the time or the place."
Sanders, who's been on Pelini's staff all three years, was not at a scheduled appearance for NU assistant coaches at a recruiting event in Omaha on signing day. Also missing were offensive coordinator Shawn Watson and receivers coach Ted Gilmore, the only remaining members of former NU coach Bill Callahan's staff.
Also telling, none of those three coaches had been involved in a recruiting visit since Jan. 7.
Pelini said no one on the staff has been fired. He also said he had not hired any new coaches "up to this point."
One name to keep an eye on -- other than Raymond -- is Ohio assistant coach Ross Els, a leading candidate to replace Mike Ekeler as linebackers coach. Ekeler accepted the Indiana defensive coordinator position in December.
TOP OF THE CLASS
QB Bubba Starling (Gardner-Edgerton High, Gardner, Kan.) -- A four-star recruit according to Rivals.com and Scout.com, Starling is also considered the top high school baseball prospect in the June MLB Draft. He's coming to Lincoln for the summer, but will have a multi-million dollar decision to make by Aug. 15, the deadline for MLB teams to sign their draftees.
CB Charles Jackson (Collins High, Klein, Texas) -- Jackson, a four-star recruit, is arguably Nebraska's headline recruit on defense in this class. Scout.com ranks him the second-best player in the country at his position, and Jackson figures to challenge for immediate playing time, as the Huskers seek a replacement for Prince Amukmara.
RB Aaron Green (Madison High, San Antonio, Texas) -- Green, whose brother, Andrew, is a defensive back for the Huskers, is one of the most-prized recruits. He rushed for more than 4,800 yards and scored 63 touchdowns over his last three high school seasons, and with Rex Burkhead the Huskers' only experienced running back returning, Green can fill a much-needed void and play as a true freshman.
