Mean Green coach Darrell Dickey said UNT and Florida International were both hungry for a win.
It hardly seemed that way as the two teams tied an NCAA record by playing seven overtimes, missing four field goals apiece in the extra sessions. The Mean Green finally prevailed 25-22 when Denis Hopovac hit the game-winning field goal in the seventh OT.
"I am tremendously proud of the way that this team played hard all the way to the end," Dickey told the Denton Record-Chronicle. "It was obvious that both teams were very hungry for a win."
To UNT's credit, it rallied for 11 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but the problems that had plagued it still lingered.
The Mean Green (2-4, 1-1) is still searching for a consistent quarterback. After earning the starting job three games ago, Woody Wilson has continued to struggle. Against FIU, the junior college transfer threw three interceptions. He was replaced by starter Daniel Meager.
The Mean Green's inconsistency offensively has to be corrected or they might not be as fortunate their next close game.
UNT Is off this week before traveling to Arkansas State Oct. 21.
