Boilermakers report: Inside slant

Running backs who could play slot receiver.

A tight end who might become an offensive or defensive lineman.

Receivers who have a chance to bolster the return game.

Purdue football coach Danny Hope isn't ready to proclaim the 2011 recruiting class the most versatile of his three, but it does feature several changeable parts.

"That might be true once we get them going," Hope said of whether this year's group is his best. "We thought last year's class was exceptional.

"We were right, in the end. A lot of those guys played, a lot started and some of them made all-Big Ten."

Hope said up to 10 of the 16 players signed in this class could see action next season.

TOP OF THE CLASS

LB Armstead Williams (Gateway High, Monroeville, Pa.) -- A top-25 outside linebacker, Williams was getting more attention as a receiver but told coach Danny Hope that he prefers defense. He is athletic and can drop into coverage.

WR/ATH Frankie Williams (Robinson High, Tampa) -- Listed as the No. 37 athlete in the nation by Rivals.com, he will boost the Boilermakers' return game. Williams set a school record with nine kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns. The mark was previously held by current Kansas City Chief Javier Arenas.

TE Robert Kugler (North Allegheny High, Wexford, Pa.) -- Scout.com lists him as the No. 9 tight end in the nation and a four-star prospect. He's ranked as the No. 21 tight end nationally by ESPN.com. Kuger was named the 2010 PIAA Class AAAA Pennsylvania Player of the Year by the Associated Press.
