When it was competitive last season, Rice's offense was effective.

The Owls, who have struggled on defense in recent years, won four games last year and didn't score less than 28 points in any of those wins. This year, that offense will get shaken up a bit.

It starts with the departure of offensive coordinator David Beaty, who left to take a similar position for Kansas. As of Feb. 2, Rice coach David Bailiff was still looking for an offensive coordinator.

Whoever is hired will be Rice's second coordinator in two years. The team that struggled to develop continuity on offense last season, almost certainly will have to adapt to more changes.

One of those changes is at quarterback. Last year three different players were in contention to start for almost the entire season. One of those players, Taylor Cook, will move to tight end.

In another switch, running back Shane Turner will move to defensive back. That shouldn't be a problem because of the emergence last season of running back Sam McGuffie. He could grow into one of the most dangerous players in Conference USA.

TOP OF THE CLASS

QB Driphus Jackson (Cedar Hill High, Cedar Hill, Texas) -- Some consider Jackson to be the jewell of this signing class. He participated in the U.S. Army All-America All-Star Game after winning a reality show that was based on finding the nation's top under-the-radar quarterback. He might not get on the field this season, but should be the quarterback of the future.

LB Nick Elder (Central Catholic Marianist, San Antonio, Texas) -- Elder is a speed linebacker who is quick as they come, sideline to sideline. He was named all state despite missing a significant chunk of the season due to an injury.

DE Michael Sam (Strake Jesuit, Houston, Texas) -- Thanks to his athleticism, Sam made plays all over the field. He blocked a field goal, forced fumbles and even blocked a kick. He has been lauded for his leadership ability.
