Trojans report: Inside slant

The "Drive for Five" ended in yet another Sun Belt Conference title.

The Trojans will shoot for their sixth consecutive league championship in 2011. Troy shared the Sun Belt title with Florida Atlantic last season despite losing two conference games, marking the fifth year in a row the Trojans have been outright champions or shared the title.

Troy is in a position to finish on top again. Quarterback Corey Robinson returns to run the high-powered offense and eight starters are back on defense. The Trojans are coming off an 8-5 season and a 6-2 league record.

While the going was rocky at times, Troy's best efforts of the season came in the last two games. The Trojans assured themselves of title No. 5 by routing Florida International 44-7 and then rolled past Ohio 48-21 in the New Orleans Bowl.

Coach Larry Blakeney and his players know what it's like to feel the pressure of playing with high expectations. Teams have been trying knock the Trojans from the top spot for the better part of a decade and it hasn't worked. It would be no surprise to see Troy contending again 2011.

TOP OF THE CLASS

WR Bryan Holmes (Union County High School, Lake Butler, Fla.) -- Listed as a three-star recruit by ESPN, he'll get the chance to earn playing time right away. Holmes has the speed to get open deep in the secondary and make big plays.

RB Montrell Conner (Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Monroe La.) -- A four-star recruit coming out of high school, he played one season at Mississippi State before going the JUCO route. The Trojans weren't expecting to land Connor, who has three years of eligibility remaining.

DE Xavian Evans (Itawamba Community College, Pontotoc, Miss.) -- He could see playing time immediately after two outstanding seasons at the JUCO level. Evans, rated a three-star recruit by Scout.com, had 38 tackles last season, his first as a defensive end.
