Knights report: Inside slant
Signing day became signing "days" for UCF, and that is a good thing.
Leilon Willingham, a linebacker out of Denver, and Rayshon Williams, a wide receiver and Willingham's teammate at Mullen High, became second-day signees for coach George O'Leary.
The Orlando Sentinel reported that weather problems had delayed signing ceremonies at their school the day before.
That boosts UCF's catch to 29 newcomers.
Not surprisingly, O'Leary expressed satisfaction with the class, but because of the number of veterans returning, he doesn't expect the newcomers to have much of an impact early.
"Right now, if you look at the team coming back, Jah Reid up front is the only guy graduating," O'Leary said. "All the running backs are back. All the tight ends will be back.
"At receiver we lose three guys who were steady players, but we have kids coming up that are very good players and we just have to get them enough reps in the spring."
Quarterback obviously is in good hands with Jeff Godfrey returning, though the position needs a solid backup.
"Defensively, the secondary with the people coming back and kids coming in, we have a lot of athleticism there to help us out," O'Leary said. "Defensive line will be very good, but I'll know more after the spring. With linebackers, it's just who fits where. There are a lot of them there.
"What I like to do in the spring is see where, if any, freshmen have a shot or not."
TOP OF THE CLASS
DE Toby Jackson (Navarro Junior College, Corsicana, Texas) -- Jackson is already on campus after transferring from Navarro, where he was rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com. He is expected to contribute right away with the departure of veteran DE Bruce Miller.
CB Jeremy Davis (Milford Academy, New Berlin, N.Y. -- Davis signed with Miami out of high school in Cape Coral, Fla., but he didn't qualify and attended Milford Academy instead. Scout.com and Rivals.com both gave him three stars. The Knights are looking for help in the secondary with the departures of CBs Lawrence Young and Justin Boddie and SS Reggie Weams.
DT Demetris Anderson (Westwood High, Fort Pierce, Fla.) -- Anderson played mostly nose tackle in high school but is capable of playing on offense, too. At 6-2, 285, Anderson may need some seasoning before getting onto the field, but he is considered a three-star prospect by both Scout.com and Rivals.com.
