Cavaliers report: Inside slant

Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes · Inside slant

It was all positive for Virginia coach Mike London on Feb. 2, as the fruits of his labor started to pay off in the form of the Cavaliers' 26 signees, five of which are ranked in the ESPNU Top 150. The class, ranked as high as No. 19 overall on the recruiting sites, addressed some spots London saw as necessities.

"What I wanted to address was speed and athleticism," London said. "And I think when you look at the skill, whether wide receiver, DB, athlete, that you see guys that have the ability to play on both sides of the ball."

London's class contains two of the top 20 athletes from ESPN.com rankings. Add with that athleticism seven different defensive lineman, a quarterback, and London's class starts to look especially well rounded.

"I don't think there's nothing that we didn't address," London said. "Got a little bit of everything, to tell you the truth."

Now the focus for London and the Cavs turns back to the football field, where the team will look for replaces for departed quarterback Marc Verica, running back Keith Payne, and cornerbacks Ras-I Dowling and Chase Minnifield.

TOP OF THE CLASS

CB Demetrious Nicholson (Bayside High School, Virginia Beach, Va.) -- A four-star recruit and the No. 4 CB in the nation according to ESPN.com, Nicholson is described as just "a few inches away from being a top national corner." The 2010 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year could see playing time early, especially with the graduation of CBs Ras-I Dowling and Chase Minnifield.

ATH Darius Jennings (Gilman School, Baltimore, Md.) -- A versatile athlete who scouts say could play quarterback, wide receiver, scatback, or corner back at the college level, Jennings is a four star recruit according to ESPN.com and the No. 10 ATH in the nation according to Rivals.com. For a Virginia offense that lacked a certain "spark" in 2010, Jennings is an ideal fit and could see some early action in Bill Lazor's offense.

ATH Dominique Terrell -- Another ESPN.com four-star athlete in Mike London's second recruiting class, Terrell has the skills to be a solid wide receiver, scatback or cornerback for the Cavaliers. While it's still undetermined which side of the ball Terrell will end up on, expect to hear his name called out a few times at Scott Stadium in 2011.
