Demon Deacons report: Inside slant

Inside slant · Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes

The Demon Deacons like their new class of recruits. It's just that they hope others don't see all the value in the 14-member class until a couple of years have passed.

That's because coach Jim Grobe wants to go back to the formula that worked well for him a few years ago. That involves redshirting players until they gain more physical maturity.

"Hopefully, they'll not play right away," Grobe said. "If they're good enough, we'll play them."

Grobe said the new class is mostly a group that should be impact players. But after a season in which true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were thrust into vital roles, the ideal plan will be to cut back on that youthfulness in the coming seasons.

The result of the inexperience was a 3-9 record. So the Demon Deacons are reeling going into 2011, and one what to correct that is to put more experienced players on the field.

While the Demon Deacons would like to take the development route with their new signees, Grobe said he's more willing in the past to play players who can contribute. Part of that might come after the past season that included a shocking nine-game losing streak.

TOP OF THE CLASS

QB Kevin Sousa (Lake Nona, Orlando, Fla.) -- A former verbal commitment to Michigan, he has the size at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds that's an attention-getter right away. Arm strength is one of his pluses, though ideally he'll have a season to redshirt to nail down some fundamentals.

DE Gods-Power Offor (American Senior, Haileah, Fla.) -- The Demon Deacons expect that he'll gain attention for more reason than his name because of his overall athletic ability. He comes undersized at 220 pounds for play along the line, but there's room to build his frame and his quickness can make up for lack of strength.

WR Airyn Willis (Southwest Guilford, High Point, N.C.) -- He represents the most local of the recruits in this Wake Forest class, switching a commitment from Georgia Tech. He played quarterback in high school, but he'll be tagged for other duties, most likely on the perimeter, for the Demon Deacons.
