Polamalu out as USC offensive coordinator

Kennedy Polamalu is the latest assistant coach to be out at USC this offseason, a source told CBS Friday. The Trojans offensive coordinator was let go by head coach Lane Kiffin in the wake of a disappointing 7-6 season by a team that was voted as the preseason No. 1 pick.

USCFootball.com first reported the story.

Despite an offense featuring the nation's best WR tandem (Marqise Lee and Robert Woods); a four-year starting QB (Matt Barkley) and a pair of running backs that had been 1,000-yard rushers (Silas Redd and Curtis McNeal), the Trojans ranked only sixth in the Pac-12 in scoring and fifth in total offense. Worse, they were No. 102 in third-down conversions in 2012.

Polamalu, it should be noted, was not USC's play-caller. Lane Kiffin, the head coach, handled the play-calling responsibilities.

The 49-year-old Polamalu, a former USC fullback, is the fourth Trojans assistant to leave the staff this winter, joining defensive coach Monte Kiffin, linebacker coach Scottie Hazelton and defensive backs coach Marvin Sanders.
