Jets coach Brian VanGorder hired as Notre Dame defensive coordinator

Jets linebackers coach Brian VanGorder will become Notre Dame' new defensive coordinator, a source told CBS.

The 54-year-old VanGorder replaces Bob Diaco who left South Bend to become the new head coach at UConn. Prior to his season with the Jets, VanGorder was the Auburn DC in 2012. That season the Tigers ranked No. 66 in scoring defense and No. 79 in total defense. Before that he had spent four seasons as the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator, where the team ranked seventh in the NFL in fewest points allowed during that stretch from 2008-2011.

News of the hire was first reported by

A decade ago VanGorder was one of the hottest name assistants in college football. In 2003, he won the Broyles Award honoring the nation's top assistant for his work as the Georgia DC.

The Michigan native was on the same staff as Irish head coach Brian Kelly from 1989-91 at Grand Valley State. Kelly became the head coach at GVSU, while in 1992 VanGorder took over as the head coach for three seasons at Wayne State.
