John Thompson likely new defensive coordinator at Texas State

John Thompson is expected to become the new defensive coordinator at Texas State, a source told CBSSports.com. He would replace Craig Naivar, who has left Dennis Franchione's Sun Belt program to become the special teams coordinator at Kentucky. Naivar is taking over for Bradley Dale Peveto who left UK for the same role at LSU.

The 58-year-old Thompson most recently had been the DC at Arkansas State and had a record of 2-0 as interim head coach for the Red Wolves. In 2013, Thompson's defense ranked No. 30 in the country in fumbles forced while ranking No. 58 in scoring defense.

In addition to Arkansas State, Thompson has been a defensive coordinator at Ole Miss, South Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, Southern Miss, Memphis, Louisiana Tech and Northwestern State and he also was the head coach at East Carolina.
