Last postcard from Dublin: Thank you Baile Atha Cliath

DUBLIN, Ireland – The Game Down The Street becomes the center of the world on Saturday.

Well, someone's world.

Two-hundred media have been credentialed for Notre Dame-Navy. They are from Germany, Austria, Japan, Hungary and France. There is someone here from the Japan Irish Network.

What?

Those global journalists are here to cover a game that made Page 8 of the Irish Times on Saturday. Friday's Evening Times featured a picture in sports. A picture. One moment they all missed: Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo telling his players, "That team we're playing tomorrow, they're bigger than us."

This is a sophisticated European capital. There is a Super Bowl of sorts here on Sunday with the All-Ireland Gaelic Football semifinal between Dublin and Mayo.

In Gaelic, Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath. Hold the Mayo.

Thanks, then, for the Irish beef and sweet potato fries.

Thanks, Dublin, for the mushrooms for breakfast.

Thanks for this visual: a 10-year-old escorting his father out of Kehoe's. Every dad needs a wing man. This one was weighed down with pints for his friends.

Kehoe's was established in 1803 and features a wall quoting James Joyce.

Thanks for the DART. The rail system is efficient, clean and safe.

Thanks for that Gaelic. Ireland's native tongue sounds a little bit like Vulcan but it is charming. I'm going to learn it.

And to think next Saturday night I'm going to be in the Midwest in mid-Missouri in the middle of an SEC game between Mizzou and Georgia. Wonder if they'll have mushrooms.

Anyone in need of a credential from all the BCS title games? Dennis Dodd has them. In three decades in the business, he's covered everything from the Olympics to Stanley Cup to conference realignment. Just get him on campus in a press box in the fall. His heart lies with college football.
